That's likely because they use very heavy, broadcast-grade tripods that cost upwards of $7k - $10k and have vibration absorbing pan/tilt heads to hold the camera. In addition, modern lenses are electronically stabilized using built-in gyro sensors deploying tiny motors that eliminate vibration, plus now the good production cameras now use built-in AI to frame a subject, and at 120Hz of frame speed, if there are vibrations, the AI compensates by intelligently stacking the frames using advanced algorithms so that when you get the image on your screen, it looks perfectly still.

And as if that wasn't enough, most cameramen under those conditions will hang a 50lb.bag of sand from the middle of the tripod, keeping the entire camera and tripod glued to the ground, with another three sandbags draped over the bottom of each leg of the tripod.

That may be 100% accurate but I still don't trust them.

Plus there was a guy in the parking garage in Gulfport harbour area that had a 150 + mph gust detection although insurance companies tried to dispute it. (Crazy mfer lucky to have survived)

NHC has standards for wind speed. Sustained winds are usually measured on the ground without any influence of structures and height. Buildings and height can amplify winds. Look at the baws on a few boats in Port Fourchon during Ida, they were measuring some pretty high winds, but NWS/NHC discounted those measurements.

High winds in disney right now. See some shingles of hotel and some tin flying off. Heard what sounded like tree/large limbs breaking and falling. No major damage to see from my balcony right now but I'm on the side of hotel with wind blowing away from me. Could be bad on other side so I'll check it in morning.

Orlando is definitely getting some big wind. I'd say this is up there with Irma and Ian for us. Maybe not Charley yet but the worst is still yet to come.
yeah, I’d agree- definitely more wind than Ian, but only about half the rain probably on par with Irma but maybe a little more wind. May have gotten higher gusts since I last saw that we were getting hurricane force gusts at the Executive airport near down town. Not as bad as predicted and nowhere close to Charlie wind back in 2004.

:edit: winds definitely worse than Irma as I saw a report of 86mph gust at Orlando International airport. But we still have power thank goodness. Worst seems to be over but Still blowing hard now. Still seeing transformer blowing.

So was this wishcasting and fearmongering by the media or was there a legitimate reason for the drop in power of the storm and winds?

I'm glad it wasnt as bad as feard... just saying calling for a possible cat5 and evacuations only for cat2 winds and rain is what makes people not want to evacuate next time.

Nothing even happened here in Miami. Couldn't even hear the wind like I could the day before Helene. Looks totally normal outside. Palm trees not even moving

There has been very little information on actual storm surge. Has anyone heard anything about flooding in Sarasota?

Unfortunately yes. No totals, but this is a quote from one county….

quote:

St. Lucie County Sheriff Keith Pearson also confirmed to Fox Weather that there have been 17 tornadoes along with several fatalities in his county

17 tornados in one county…wtf

I have family in Melbourne. Sister told me last night Cocoa Beach had a bad tornado. I haven't talked to her this morning, so hopefully that east coast is doing ok.

This was always the forecast. The evacuation was ordered because of uncertainty with landfall location. If this went further north the surge would have been 10+ feet into tampa bay instead of sarasota.

And a lot of the time the photogs themselves are under cover while the talent is out in the elements. The sites are all predetermined well in advance for landfall coverage. Aftermath is a different story and is obviously fluid

At Disney resort; wind was loud from 2:30-4:00 as we got the backside winds. Other than that, very calm. I’m guessing minor damage, maybe a few trees and some big limbs.

I’m gonna go check out the area in just a few minutes if it’s not gonna bother any first responder types. I’ll turn around if it looks like I need to.

The National Hurricane Center forecast never called for Milton to be a Cat 5 at landfall. They had always forecast it to weaken prior to landfall, the question was just how much it would weaken.
