100+ mph winds knock down almost everything. Just seems like any kind of sound waves would have a hard time penetrating the vortex eye wall.

Most modern BTS radiate their signal. (When I mean radiate its at their perspective band frequencies 4/66 2/25 12/17 etc.) Microwaves can still penetrate hurricane force winds.

The SNR will most definitely go up in an event as such.

But most Macro sites are designed for ~ Cat 2.

Entire Island of PR is currently in the dark.

Estimates 4 to 6 months recovery of power grid.

Yeh, it's not as easy to roll in a bunch of power trucks from the Midwest as done here.

Isolated population, dwindling supplies, no power for extended period... sounds like a story from 2005.

Thats a real life nightmare about to happen there.

This is going to be one hell of a population breakdown study. That's for sure.

So much for my question about how these islands keep power during these storms.

Recon appears to indicates Maria is likely down to a Cat 2 rocking winds just over 100 mph. If so, mountains really did a number on her and those people north of the bigger slopes are probably catching some crazy gusts as she blows on by.

Yeah I saw that GOES16 loop on Storm2K of the crazy winds coming off the mountains.

That's a good image to see the sort of impact the mountains have.

And yeah, last vortex message has pressure at 960 mb.

Everything used in recovery has to be brought by boat or large plane. If the entire power grid has been destroyed they are basically starting from scratch

Apparently it hasn't been updated since the 70's.

I am not 100% sure if PR uses a three phase power distribution system. However, we're talking about literally replacing everything here and possibly insulating it better.

As Duke alluded too, they are on an island.

There is no truck convoy coming to the rescue.

Unthinkable. An entire large island Of 3.5 million people without electricity. My goodness. It has to be hell on earth.

And the Cajun Navy can't carry the bigger equipment they'll need.
