Should have specified between hours 24 and 48. Every model sees strengthening as she makes the final approach to Florida.

So this thing is supposed to go straight north in the not so distant future according to the models.

Yeah. I expect it to intensify when it breaks free completely from Cuba and heads north.

Yeah, seems to be little doubt about that. The latest looks good for a little longer ride up the Cuban coast... so fingers crossed for a weakened storm before the recovery.

The way you speak about weather makes me feel feelings

I just looked up the topography of Cuba, much more mountainous to the southeast, flatter where Irma is currently

This thread will have more posts than the Harvey thread before Irma ever makes US landfall.

An intensitfying Cat 4 to low 5 is about one of the most frightening experiences on Earth. More so than a steady state or weakening version.

If it continues riding Cuba (as it appears to be trending toward), seems like Bonita Springs/Ft. Meyers is more likely.

You stop that. My dad lives in St. Pete and gambled and stayed. I told him to go!

The more it trends along the Cuban coastline, the more water it will have before it hits Florida. We've got to get this thing north sooner than later just to reduce the amount of time over water.

*Disclaimer: Amateur storm tracker would be an extremely generous title for me.

Hope your pops is hunkering down, regardless.

I hear you... but it's a give and take, right? What if Cuba really kicked the shite out of her while she's on the western track? I get that, as Duke pointed out, the intensifying cat4 -> cat5 is a bitch, but... maybe Cuba rips her up more than expected. I hope, anyways.

That's just your liver talking

So I just got sucked down the rabbit hole of Tampa's particular vulnerability to a major hurricane, storm surge and almost no hurricane proof building codes. I really, really hope my husband doesn't wake me up when he leaves to take our son hunting in a bit. I actually have to play an important tennis match and should be resting from today. My coach is going to whip my arse if I show up dragging.

That last map doesnt look good for Tampa/St Pete for sure.

He is hunkered down. But I think we was hunkered down for a hurricane whose eye was passing over central florida. Not right over him.
