Yep.

Land (statute) miles are based on the Latin for "thousand paces". Nautical miles are based on a percentage of the earth's circumference.

Yeah, if you look at it that way.

I thought you meant 180 MPH was more that 180 knots.

Seriously though -- that shows around 200mph winds while it's in the Gulf. Obviously this is still a week or more out and so much can happen but to see the most accurate model predicting a 200 mph hurricane in the gulf, curving northwestward, is extremely ominous.

Stop what you're doing, heart stop for a moment, "nah that can't be right" kind of ominous.

It seems like everything is tending towards the Gulf on this one.

Can any expert give even a shred of hope here?

I've never been more worried about a storm this far out as I am on this one.

Yup.

This has the potential, if it does enter the gulf this strong, to be an all-time storm.

I am legit terrified right now.

Yeah, it's time to chill out.

Harvey just reminded us we're vulnerable to major storms and for the first time in a very long time we have another one blow up in short order. Irma will probably be a very powerful hurricane at some point. Where it impacts has a very wide window of possibilities. We're at least a week away from appropriately freaking out.

I'm waiting until next Friday. If it's still on track to get into the Gulf by then, I'm buying Walmart's inventory.

Where is "everything pointing toward this in the gulf?"

Don't forget Matthew from last year, Euro and EPS were Gulf bound until they weren't. Euro is currently one of the farthest west models.

Here is the Euro EPS for Matthew, the EPS is overly dispersive. The 12z Euro run today was on the far western edge of all the guidance. The image below is just a reminder that there is a long ways to go before we need to worry about Irma getting into the Gulf.

For comparison, that's a low end EF5 tornado.
