I understand not wanting to drop a dropsonde over land... but it seems the Hurricane Hunters can't even fly over land... why is that?

They fly pretty low in a turbulent storm.

Would you rather it be a monster storm?

I rather people not prop up a pussy storm. It's more about attracting viewers than about informing people.

yes... but like tonight... they seemed to exit the storm and set up for another run through it but as soon as they saw land they hooked a tight U-turn

they weren't IN the storm then

It's amazing how fast this moved, yesterday morning it was coming off of Southern Florida now it has made landfall already on the Gulf Coast.

These storms, even weak ones, can cause havoc.

Yep, hurricanes and tropical storms do freaky stuff out in pine tree country. It’s taken me ten years to adjust to the weather patterns compared to living a few blocks from the Sound. My pops keeps insisting that I dig and install a safe room.

Yeah, they aren't going to fly low enough to make a pass if it's going to be over land because they fly in low and don't want to risk something going wrong and adding a plane crash to riding out the "eyewall".

Plus, the obviously can't do a drop over population centers.

Amazing how 90% of still images from a paused DVR makes women look like OT3s

I know nothing about planes and flying... so I didn't know what their flying level was... but more like why not fly out over land to just set up for another run into a storm that's close to land

I understand that... would suck to die in a hurricane via research with a dropsonde falling on your head

God, WLOX is backtracking like a mf'er! Her fat arse just said the predictions were right in that it was within the cone of uncertainty. At 5pm, they had it coming straight into Biloxi! Dumbass!! The school system based their closings on their dumbass predictions. They need to go back to school and learn meteorology and quit following the damn models so much.

Local Fox News here had a reporter in Gulfport waiting for the storm to come through. He was high and dry and seemed very bored. Ha.

A storm with potentially 50-60 mph winds overnight headed to Hattiesburg. Here is the latest Tweet from WDAM's Twitter account:
