She's looking good, which is bad news for everybody in VA/NC/SC at the moment.

Eye has cleared out pretty well this morning and a deep ring of convection is wrapping around the center. Certainly looks like a Cat 3 at this point.

Is Isaac going to make it through the Caribbean?

And that wave moving towards the Gulf looks really healthy.

Can't be stressed enough - don't worry about exact rainfall totals or contour lines. If you're in northwestern SC, anywhere in NC west of I-77, and anywhere in Virginia west of I-77 and south of Richmond, you should be making preparations for the possibility of 20"+ of rain over the weekend and into early next week.

Navy ships off Virginia’s coast are getting set to sail out of the path of the powerful hurricane

The Virginia fleet is huge, and the also large Pearl Harbor fleet is also looking at tropical impacts.

I'm not quite sure what the USN's supply capabilities are for putting the whole fleet out to sea at once, especially while the whole area including the crew's families are in hurricane prep.

I know in my time in the Navy, and with a month's worth of notice, our supply crews were known to miss a thing or two.

So while we also hope for the best for our fellow Americans on the east coast, I'll lend a prayer or two for our sailors stuck out to sea for 6 days with 3 days worth of toilet paper, eating canned beans twice per day and looking at the makeshift signs in the stalls saying "Please Conserve, No More than 3 Squares per Bathroom Event."

biggest thing I see in that gif is the storm is still moving in a very westerly pattern

seems like everyone's still waiting for that northward lift to start

there's a wobble north in the gif... but the movement still looks mostly to the west

I can’t wait to hear Jeff screaming about 170 mph winds while it’s a breezy 55 mph around him.

Seems like Hurricanes come in groups. If theres one they just start popping up one after the other.

I know one of the carrier fleets is currently out to sea already. Left a couple of weeks ago.

Probably not, esp. if Florence does a stall and drifts south. That setup would produce unfavorable conditions over Isaac. In simplest terms, the outflow of Florence will shear Isaac to death. The earlier runs that had Issac moving towards the Gulf also had Florence curving back out to sea pretty quickly after landfall.

They only retire the name if the storm isn’t a pussy.

yep... made landfall in Louisiana 6 yrs ago... wasn't destructive enough to get the name retired so the name's turn in the rotation is back up
