i really think they enjoy the fighting...i guess it's a game for them...i'm down to maybe 4-5 birds now, and the one that i've been getting the most pictures of stakes out one feeder and defends it, but he also tries to steal from the other feeders that other birds are guarding...i guess stolen nectar tastes better

Is it the premix they don't like?
i've used premixed solution at times and they don't seem to mind it...but since it's so late in the season, you have to be careful because it might actually have gone bad by the time you get it...if it's cloudy or has an off smell, it's no good...also, if you leave it in the feeder for more than 2-3 days and the feeder is exposed to direct sunlight, it will go bad faster...oh, and don't use any kind of soap to clean them, it's safer to use a mix of 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water and let the parts of the feeder soak for a few hours...if it's visibly dirty, you can use a bottle brush...otherwise, rinse all the parts well in warm water, then soak in the vinegar water solution...
i hope this helps...

One of my favorites. One thing that has me sad right now is that the shitty feral cats seem to have really done a number on the birds around my joint. We're finally seeing an uptick, but we don't have the numbers that we usually have, and that has been the trend over the last few years.

Mine left after the first time the overnight temperature got into the 50s...these are some of the last shots I got...

They are regulars here...they are particularly fond of giving me the side eye

Keep your feeders clean and full through the winter. I have had wintering hummingieach of the last 4 years.
Currently have at least one ruby throated hummingbird female, and I expect / hope for a Rufous after Thanksgiving.

Can you eat them?
I’ve heard they taste like chicken George, very small chickens.

I saw a very small, dark, hummingbird feeding on my flowers the other day. Definitely wasn't a ruby throat.

Ruby Throated
These were my Dad's favorite birds. Every morning he would fill a batch of warm sugar water, hang his two feeders, and sit on his back porch bench drinking his morning coffee. That was Dad's time.
They used to swarm the feeders (20 or 30 per feeder) within 10 or 20 minutes after hanging them. Watched it happen a million times. Beautiful bird.

See bald eagles in my back yard most everyday. That's a treat.
