Oil field workers rejoice as a halt in production would drive prices up.

Nearly all Fort McMurray neighbourhoods under mandatory evacuation as wildfire rages
Tens of thousands of people are being evacuated as a wildfire has crossed into Fort McMurray city limits, setting homes in Centennial Trailer Park and the community of Abasand ablaze.

Pretty impressive flames.

A lot of people have already lost their homes. They were evacuated without time to get their possessions or pets.
The fire is massive. It seems to be south of the oil facility. It is moving toward town.
I have friends up there.

I heard its spreading quickly and blowing up gas stations all over the area.

I saw one article that said it had almost reached a gas station. About 6500 acres are burning.
They have low humidity, it is 92 degrees, and the winds shifted to kick the fire toward town at about 11 MPH.

That's out in the middle of nowhere. Would suck being stuck up there w/ a fire closing in.

That would be a prairie fire. Ain't no trees in that part of Alberta.

Prairie is further south. That area is forested. I wouldn't want to be anywhere within 20 miles of that thing. You don't realize how savage these fires are until you see one up close.

Ft. McMurray has one of the highest per capita incomes in North America.

Make a firebreak by piling up all the truck nuts!

From the article posted... I can't believe such a socially progressive society as Canada still has something called Slave Lake.

There definitely are trees, but but fairly small pines. The road up to Ft. McMurray looks like it is surrounded by Christmas trees.

I was mistaken on the fire location. Everything except Baker Hughes seems to be a possibility.
I have some friends that went there in the late eighties and began buying houses for rental units. They both worked hard and invested everything into acquiring more properties for years.
They have done well and I hate to see a fire pull the rug out from under them. They are insured but it is still a kick in the balls.
Another LA connection to there is Ralph G., a great guy that used to live on a houseboat on the Tickfaw. His daughter lives up there. Ralph finally sold the houseboat and went on walkabout, ending up in Ft McMurray.
