Long's anti education/wealth stupidity still exists in this state.

JBE admires the man and tries to emulate him.

His fund raisers are his "deduct box"---pay to play kind of crap where state vendors are "invited" to the fund raisers and pay up.

Todd Graves makes the box now that everybody in Louisiana has to put 5-10% of their salary into.

So how were people supposed to pay their deductions? It's not like they could just pay online or from a credit card?

My grandmother's 1st cousin was the Head Pharmacist (and only pharmacist until almost 1970 when she finally got some assistance) during the Long Admin. at a state charity hospital. She personally related to me and my dad how it all happened....

Every payday she received her paycheck from personnel. She then HAD to take the check to the cashier on the 2nd floor and cash it (I remember asking her, "why not just keep it all", her answer, "I like having my job".). Her next stop was the Hospital Administrator's office where she dropped her percentage in cash into a Dr.'s black bag on his desk (think Gunsmoke and the old doctor's kit). At precisely 5pm the Hospital Admin would board a train to Baton Rouge with the full black bag. Around midnight he would return with a brand new black bag. Every payday the same thing played out.

Keep in mind, this relative of mine was 1 of the 1st 3 women ever admitted to Tulane and graduated with a Pharmacy Degree in 1921.

My 86 year old dad has some further tales of the tangled web of good ol' boys. He worked for the state out of Winnfield in DoTd when he graduated LaTech in Civil Engr. in the 1950's.

He'd have to tell that stuff while taking notes though. It's this guy's brother got a job by hiring this other's son to be the paperboy to a 3rd who were all getting cigarettes from a 4th who got a lump sum from a 5th to spread among them according to an arrangement from Director of ____ dept.

The funniest part of the web is what is now the trifling amounts of money involved. Like maybe $150 to be divided between 6-7 people and how the whole chain would breakdown whenever one would get PO'd at another and then replace that one and so on and so forth.

Oh, btw, our literal next door neighbor in Winnfield was the Sheriff. We lived about 3 streets over from the Courthouse in a neighborhood where if you went to open the window on one side of house you could look into the eyes of your neighbor doing the same thing. Sheriff's wife made THE best chicken and dumplings too!
