I'm telling the truth! Its probably closer to 290 on average when I hit it well, but I can crush it sometimes. I did hit a 5 iron about 175 a few months back. 160 out and just trying to get it close, hit it sweet and ended up flying the green!

My first response was the typical OT response. I'll give you that. But this...

I did hit a 5 iron about 175

175 is a smooth 7 iron

Looking at this chart: 175 is pretty good for a 5 iron dudes.

Been back home for 3 weeks. Except for the 4 days I went deer hunting. We lost the job I was supposed to go back on so I will likely be home for the rest of the year and hopefully not too far into next year

Many lessons in and lots of time at the practice hole and I can shoot upper 80s on a good day. But can still very easily go over 100 on an off day. Consistency is my problem. Still have several fat and thin shots per round. Chipping and putting are better, as is driving the ball. I'm still far from being decent. Very frustrating at times.

Maybe, all I'm saying is the average golfer is not gonna hit a 5 iron 175. Just like only 20% of weekend golfers consistently break a 100. Some people hit long and shoot a high score, while others will hit short and shot a low score. Golf has many variables, and that's what makes it great.

I can assure you that anyone who is consistently driving the ball 280 is hitting a 5 iron at least 175. Give me an hour or so and I can find the math for you.

My drives are 200-220 and my 5 iron is a 170 club, 6 is 160, 7 is 150.

I would think so too, I just don't see that 175 being every single time. For me depending on the elevation and wind if I'm 150-160 out its always gonna be a 5-6 iron, just because I'm comfortable with those clubs at those distances. Maybe I'm taking some off when I swing, because I know if I crush it that it could go 175, I just like to play smart not hard.

Eta: I also feel like if I'm 150 and I use a 7 iron I could potentially try to swing to hard and shank the ball real bad. Just playing to my strengths I guess. Every now and then I might fly the green, but I'll take that over pull left or right.

I was stuck in that same spot for a long time. I never had a lesson and would just take tips from people I played with and hit a lot of range balls. I just played a lot and the consistency came with that. Now I'm down to my lowest index ever at 11.0 and if I'm in the 80's I feel like I had a bad day. This is all at my home course though and I know how to score there. Put me anywhere else and I'll be happy with mid 80's

I'll second that. I can hit the driver 300 (as in I have done it before), but typical driver is ~230. 5-iron is consistently 175+.

My driver is my worst club, hard to control but on a good day it is 230-250 (which I think is appropriate for my ss), but I can almost always get 175 with 5 iron.

If you can go 280 consistently, 5 iron should be nearly a 200 yard club. I have certainly had days like that, but they are rare.

You sound like you swing the club a lot like I do. I don't get a very big split from my driver to mid irons, usually only 30-40 yards more. My mid irons are my best clubs though.

This could be a fitting issue, and have nothing to do with your swing.

Could be. Just bought new irons. Haven't had them adjusted yet. Definitely plan to do so.

Try starting your downswing with your hips, and swinging "under" your shoulders and not around them.

Leitz told me something similar. Start the downswing with a slight hip bump towards the target and it will cause you to come down on the inside. Guess I need to take it back to the range and work on that using the impact tape.

After I get the lies adjusted.

I'm not saying there aren't variables, but the variance isn't as wide as you think it is. The correlation between short hitters and high handicaps, and long hitters and low handicaps, is a lot closer than you think.

The that's definitely the issue, given what you've previously stated.

ETA: if you're still hitting it on the toe after you adjust them, stop coming over the top
