Graceland is in the heart of the hood. Bars on all the windows of ‘businesses’ and gang related crime abounds.

It’s a total trash area and not worth seeing something you can watch a documentary about from the safety of literally anywhere else.

Well duh. There's no need to wander around the area. I was literally just there couple weeks ago. To visit the mansion you have to park in a secure lot across the street and take a shuttle up to the property and a shuttle back. Other than being a little pricey the mansion is beautifully maintained and I would recommend it

And that’s the beauty of this forum. Lots of varying opinions so the OP can make a well-informed opinion.

It’s definitely not a “I’m right and you’re wrong” thing. Just see things differently.

I have to go to Memphis once or twice a year. It's amazing how similar large size cities along the Mississippi River are in the south. NOLA, BR, St. Louis, Memphis being the ones I am thinking of. You are in an upper middle class enclave and within a quarter or half a mile you are in a place you shouldn't be in broad daylight.

Having said that, we generally stick to the Medical District just east of downtown. We have visited the Zoo and ate at a few BBQ places. Visited the Peabody and saw the ducks. Never felt unsafe in those areas but I also may just be blissfully unaware.

Beale Street is OK. Somebody mentioned the Westin and that’s a good suggestion. It’s right off Beale, which is only about two blocks long, itself. They won’t need to do a ton of walking if they don’t want to. If they want to visit the Peabody, that’s great. But no need to bother staying there.

A couple of nice downtown restaurants to check out would be The Lobbyist and Catherine & Mary’s. Slider Inn if they want something more laid back.

They should try to see Graceland if they haven’t already. Tickets are pricey but it includes much more than just a house tour. It’s an entire museum complex and can eat up the entire afternoon.

They will be fine in that area of downtown. They just don't need to stray off the main paths especially after dark.

If they're not dead set on the Peabody, tell them to look at the Memphian in Midtown. There is a ton to do in that area, and it's a short enough drive to Beale Street. From Midtown they could also get to East Memphis easily where a lot of the nice shopping is and also has a lot of places to eat and things to do.

Collierville Square that someone suggested is great as well but a completely different vibe than Memphis. We live there, so I love it, but it might not be what they're looking for.

True, but the Commissary is still worth a visit, if only for the tamales (but everything I have tried there is good). Hard to beat ribs at Central though.

If the elderly parents do visit Beale street - they need to stop into Dyer’s for greasy delicious cheeseburgers.

The Peabody is nice, Beale Street isn't what it used to be but if they walk to Beale Street(less than 10 minutes,) and stay on Beale, they'll be just fine. Rendezvous Ribs is right by the Peabody too. A little overrated but a fun place to have lunch/dinner. Maybe buy some cool Elvis type threads from Lansky Brothers(in the Peabody.)

I'd also recommend the tour at Sun Studio. Was around $20 and the guide was very knowledgeable. The original recording studio has basically been untouched and an amazing piece of nostalgia. A nice little souvenir shop is right next door.

anywhere between the Peabody and the Forum are fine in normal hours. MPD just opened up a new downtown central command and they have a ton of high def cameras monitoring all the streets in the area full time. they've released some videos of how they've helped them prevent and arrest criminals

My family and I stayed a night in Memphis a few months back en route to another spot on vacation. We stayed downtown and arrived in town after dark (around 7:00 pm). We, including two kids under 12, walked a few blocks to Rendezvous for ribs/BBQ. It was a bit sketchy walking downtown at that time 7:30 - 8:00 but, nothing bad. Certainly not as sketchy as walking on Canal St. in NOLA at that time (which isn't necessarily "bad" either). The next day we walked downtown to eat brunch and took the kids to see the Peabody. Everything was fine.

There are DEFINITELY bad areas in Memphis. But if they kind of hang around downtown and don't stay out too late, they should be fine. Memphis also isn't as "walkable" as Nola, so they probably wouldn't find too many places they'd want to walk through outside of downtown anyway unlike Nola where you could walk down St. Charles Ave to some great restaurants and quickly find yourself in a bad spot just a few blocks away.

If nothing else, just send them this as a guidepost

Did they get “retired” from USAID?
