How trashy is a down payment on a tattoo?

Thursday night while out I overheard a conversation of this guy saying he was going to put $400 down as a down payment on a tattoo of DNA running up his side from his asscheek to his armpit. Said he couldn’t afford the whole thing right now.
I almost wanted to interject and say “please don’t” but held my tongue.
