It has been a buyer's market for legal services for over 20 years and does not appear to be getting better. If you desperately want to practice law - then, yeah, law school is the only route. Unfortunately, a lot of upper middle class smart kids don't have what it takes for medical school, then go to law school as a plan B, without any burning desire to practice law. Most of them find that it doesn't qualify them for anything except being a practicing attorney. This explains why we have so many miserable drunks clogging up the profession.
Those kids would have been better off getting an MBA or other post-graduate degree more to their liking.
Just my $0.02. Lots of lawyers out there doing well. However, many, many more are struggling along, barely keeping pace with other college graduates (especially in Louisiana.)

Why is it that a majority of the people giving advice in every lawyer/law school thread aren't lawyers?

I wouldn't say that. I'd go probably top 40-50, but outside of the top 20 I wouldn't pay private without scholly money.

Top 50, but I personally wouldn't do less than top 30. And I would choose the one with the strongest alumni connections.
Being an LSU Law alum is about as helpful as cookbook in a desert.

Strong family connections help because most people aren't graduating in the top 10 to 20%. Strong family connections makes your class rank irrelevant.

Moreover, there are some boutique firms with fewer than 100 attorneys (Susman, Keker, Bartlit, et al.) that pay 160k like the top Vault firms.
But, really, the smaller firms that pay six figures are offering fewer and fewer of those jobs each year. More and more corporate work, in particular, is being insourced to in-house legal departments, and only the truly complex issues are being outsourced to firms nowadays--typically the top Vault firms that have the resources to handle the matters.
Sure, someone in the top 10% of LSU Law could get a job earning six figures right out of school. But it's far from a guarantee. One thing that is a guarantee, though: 100% of the class thinks they can be in the top 10% after 1L. Ninety percent will be wrong.

Lot's of hate for lawyers in here. Love it.
Definitely go. Southern has a night program, and maybe Loyola and Tulane.
LSU is still old school and is traditional full-time, but Tulane isn't a bad education if you can afford it.

This needs to be repeated more. You have been a good student, made good grades, participated in clubs and stuff, studied hard; surely that makes me special right? No. You will be just like 80% of your class. Another 15% will be slackers that are probably smarter than you anyway. So that means that 95% of your class will be on par with you. A disproportionate percentage will not make top 10%. In fact many students that are just as good as you will lose their scholarship after 1L year and end up paying full ride for two years.
You are not special.
As to the whole big law and 100k thing. You can make it into BakerBotts and such from TLS. You will make 160-185 straight out of school, but keep in mind that your life will suck and you will be desperately looking for a parachute out within 4 years.
Now those 4 years open doors, but is that a trade you want to make?
