This is a parent decision IMO and not the child’s. If the vet supports the decision, put it to sleep and just tell the kids he died. They don’t need to know you put it to sleep. They can’t process that and might blame you due to their confusion.

I don't know the best way, but I can tell how not to do it which is at the dinner table while eating dinner!

My advice is get your wife to tell them b/c she will likely be more empathetic than you. You can just be there to hug them afterwards.

100% agree. This is the approach we took when it came time for our GSP. Daughters were 7 and 3 at the time. Had a talk when they got home about their buddy going to heaven.

They still talk warmly about him 3 years later and really only remember the good times.

You already know this but it’s past time to do it. Once they have no use for you they are just miserable and it’s so sad. Had to put my Aussie mix down after 16 years back in November. Vet really opened my eyes and said it’s better a month too early than a day too late.

Regarding your daughter I would explain that doggies don’t live forever and they’re only with us as long as they need to be and they make room for a new puppy one day so they can go to heaven. Whether you believe that or not it’s much easier for a child to imagine that than them just being gone. On one hand the anxiety of losing the dog can be rough but the surprise of no dog anymore can be bad too. I prepared our 7 year old a few days before just saying the dog was really sick and just was around for a few more days to say goodbye to everyone and he seemed to be fine with it. Getting a new puppy next month.

I agree, tell them after the fact. Dog went over the rainbow bridge. Buy a tee shirt with the rainbow bridge.

Hear that, OP? Tell your 7 year old daughter to suck it up because Charlie might be dropping into your backyard any day now!

Dark times are coming my friend. True democracies usually have a 200-250 year life span. It won't be in my lifetime (I'm 60), but it may come to an end in my kid's lifetimes. I efforted to raise them hard, not as hard as I was raised, but I want them to be able to endure hard times without being too soft. You bluntly tell the child, the dog is old, when living things get old, they die. Don't dwell on it, move on. By the time that 7 year old is 50, she's going to see a lot of death and suffering.

Go to another vet for a fresh look and second opinion. Have any friends or family that use a different vet they are happy with and can recommend?

If you do go to a different vet, I wouldn't come in with a lot of negative comments about your current vet....just want a second opinion.

Just my 2C worth.
