Which standards in particular are you addressing? You also realize this is the minimum to even begin training, correct? The standards once you're done aren't much better, but have fun as a bare minimum Marine. Most units I've worked with will have your arse doing additional PT if you can't do at least 12-15 pull ups and run closer to 20 minutes than 25.

I consider myself in decent shape but I know for a fact I couldn't do 1.5 miles in 13 min. I would imagine this would be the factor weeding out a number of the applicants.

A medium paced mile is 7:30. If you're remotely in shape then you could def do 1.5miles in under 13mins

Btw the Marines are the only branch that even has requirements to go to boot camp.

I have always struggled with speed. I could do a quick jog for long distances maintaining a 10 min mile or so but haven't been able to pick up much as far as pace. I'm ok with whipping every one in the pool and sticking with 30 min 5ks.

Those are simply the numbers you must have to qualify for combat jobs BEFORE you begin day 1 of boot camp. Honestly, those numbers are almost the same as boot camp entry in 1996, which is when I joined. You must progress at a certain rate during boot camp and be able to reach a much higher physical fitness score before graduating.

^ this.

I was a recruiter from 2011-2014 and our command wouldn't even ship kids unless the doubled the standard.

Pre-accession Initial Strength test was 3 Pull-ups, 44 crunches in 2 minutes and under 13:30 mile and half.

If our kids wernt doing 6 Pull-ups, 60 crunches and under 12 minutes within 90 days they'd get discharged from the delayed entry program.

Exactly! My recruiter only put me through one PFT before he shipped me off, but he gave me speech about how I would be delayed entry if I did not exceed the bare minimum by a certain percentage. I actually did very well. I did 11 dead hangs, 60 sit ups (Before the crunches were implemented), and 11:45 1-1/2 miles run. I remember those numbers because I still have the certificate he printed out for each of us who passed his standards.

My best PFT during active duty was 294/300. I maxed the dead hangs and crunches, and I was nearly perfect on my 3 mile run. Most of my other PFT scores were around 285-288/300.

Those are simply the minimum #s you need to have in order to be allowed to train. I've seen fat recruits forced to eat bare minimums all during boot camp, lose 50+ pounds, and bust out 20+ pull-ups with no problem.

Also, the flex-arm hang is useless. You won't hear an active duty male Marine say it's anything short of bullshite. The women are held to much lower standards but typically get promoted much faster.

In my unit in Barstow, I was the Marine that would retrain those nasty remedial maggots. It was fun for me, but most of them hated me. At the time I was only a Lance Corporal, and I would often have a Cpl or a Sgt under my care...it began as an awkward experience, but they soon fell in-line. Fortunately, though, I would only have a small group at a time (3-7). Marines, for the most part, are more physically fit than the other branches.

Do people, or more importantly the American military, realize just how slow a 10-minute mile pace is while running? And we're not even talking about maintaining that speed for 10-20 miles. That's only about six measly laps around a damn 400-m track.

I understand that soldiers aren't necessarily trekking cross-country like they did in the military excursions of the past, but it's arguably more practical than having to perform an arbitrary number of crunches.

Pathetic. I thought military was a source of pride. Turns out anyone can do it. Unlike law school or med school.

Were you Supply or some other administrative MOS? There's no way this would fly in any combat-oriented unit. My command would have had the NCOs get their shite together or they would be admin-sep'd.

Well the one thing the military selects out for is courage.

No I'm not. I'm not a Marine. So I'm not a bad motherfricker. Only a guy that can drop out of school and do 2 pull-ups is worthy of that distinction.

I am sure you are trying to be sarcastic, but actually that year it became harder. Sometime in late 1996, the USMC did away with kipping during pull ups. Weaker body types could swing their bodies to propel themselves upward. This was replaced with the dead hang, where you have to all the way up and all the way down without swaying your body and keeping your legs interlocked behind you. Fortunately for me, I was trained to do this early that year by my recruiter. By the end of boot camp I could only do 15 dead hangs, while the kippers were doing 20-30 pull ups. A few months later, I was performing at 100%--20 dead hangs--while the kippers were now doing 10-12 dead hangs. 2 years later, the USMC decided to change the sir ups to crunches, it was actually much harder at first. It took some time to adjust.

The USMC is also the only branch to continue to extend basic training as the other branches have shortened theirs.

I think the Navy standard for 1.5 miles is still 12:30 or better. If you can't meet that, you aren't in decent shape.

If you're under the age of 35 and can't sprint for a mile, you're fricked.

Yeah, but you're in here shite talking Marines. That alone makes you a bad motherfricker. I don't even need to meet you to know that.
