You can get pretty ripped naturally...big not so much. Your natural hormones levels can only let you gain so much muscle. The body doesn't like extremes. Waiting on somebody to tell me they weigh 220lbs @ 6% bodyfat, total 2k in the big three and how they're a genetic freak.

I've seen a bunch of dudes put on a ton of mass and get big as frick without roids. The only dudes I know that are big and "ripped" are on on juice.

Anybody can put 'size' on. I'm talking about actual muscle and maintaining some semblance of being in shape.

I do a lot of bodyweight exercises, and there's a ceiling. I'm ripped and very strong, but I'm not huge.

I am going to try heavy lifting eventually.

squat variations including single leg squats, one arm pushups, incline pushups, dips, a bunch of pullup variations. I do throw on a backpack with sand, so it's not strictly bodyweight. Sand is in zip lock bags that weigh about 3 lbs each. When I work up to 50-60 reps in an exercise without stopping, I add another bag of sand.

Depending on how many reps, It takes me from 20 minutes to a little more than an hour, and I work out 4 or 5 days a week. Occasionally up to 6 or 7, but rarely.

Backpack/sands sounds like a cheaper alternative to the "Bodyweight vest" I have been considering .

I lift light weights & pulled a muscle in my back which has been bothering me for months.

I hear a lot of mixed signals /negatively about bodyweight exercises , but I think I will try the vest /backpack with sand soon.

Less chance for injuries it seems doing bodyweight.

You can get large and ripped by just diet and exercise without roids. Don't let anyone kid you. I competed naturally at 5'9", 187lbs and 5% body fat (skin fold calipers test). It took 2 hrs of steady state cardio per day X 7 days per week plus 6 days of weight training. Diet was almost completely devoid of carbs...just chicken and eggs. I got really vascular to the point of having veins in my mid back, hams, and low abs... Christmas tree in the low back. I would say I have only average genetics, too. Thicker waist (even with six pack abs), not really round full muscle bellies...a good novice or even junior level physique competitor. But the cost of getting to that point...months of sacrifice and an unhealthy obsessiveness to achieve "that look"....it wasn't worth it to me in the end. Sure it felt great to look back at pictures of my condition and say that I really achieved a great physique...but it took too much time and effort on my part to get there and maintain it. There are some genetic freaks out there that would blow my doors off on just Big Macs and a few sets of benches. Bodybuilding is such a genetic thing that really you never know your limits until you truly test them

Yeah, I can't do without carbs. I tried, and it's not worth it.

It's true about genetics. I have a weird upper body. My wife thinks I look great. I think I just look weird.

I swear I think I have 3/4 the length of a regular upper body/torso. If I pull pants up to just below my belly button it looks like they are way above my belly button. In short, I HATE my upper body.

Don't beat yourself up dude...just try to accept the genetics that nature gave you and do what you can with them. I competed with a guy who did Zero cardio and only trained with weights...high reps, light weight, starchy carbs like white potatoes and rice. Blew us all away. Naturally the guy thought he had the panacea and tried to train others on his regimen; it only worked on HIM. Perfect example of how big of a role that genetics play in physique development.

Man I don't have 3 hours a day 7 days a week to get shredded and jacKed. I'm married with a family. I don't need to be in pro bb shape just like ripped with fairly big muscles so people see me on the street in regular clothes a d can tell I'm jacked. Then at the pool shirtless it's a peacock party. Get me?

Thanks. I'm still new at this, and I'm still learning.

I'm going to try more heavy lifting and see how that works out for me. If I can get to 175, I will look like a freak.

If I can get down to 172 I will look like a freak. I have great genetics and have natural definition. I put on muscle pretty fast. Just need to lose the belly fat. I've been doing a mix of heavy weight lifting and HIIT cardiovascular and some core work. 4 to 5 times a week. Pants are looser after 6 weeks but I doubt I've lost more than 4 or 5 lbs Due to lifting heavy.

I capped out the beginning of my senior year of high school.

No supplements. Ate constantly all day and worked out twice a day every day. Could never bench over 265. I wasn't ripped/jacked at all but I had (iirc) 11% body fat and was in incredibly good shape. I'd much rather be at that point again than be roid-ripped.

And then there's people like Bo Jackson or any other NFL running back who could be massive on a shite diet and never work out. Genetics have everything to do with it.

Hahahaha! No I get you..as a former competitor, you say "ripped" I immediately think 5% body fat or less. You can get visible abs at around 11-12% body fat with just consistency and NOT kill yourself. Hit the weights every other day and 30 min cardio on the other days. High protein (one gram per pound of body weight per day), moderate carbs (100-150 g per day) and moderate fat (60-90 grams). You'll be good in 6-8 weeks

I started really working out 6 weeks ago. I've always been active but I'm an ectomorph (naturally skinny with an extremely fast metabolism), so I've always been pretty thin.

I have a crap diet, but am in the gym 5 days a week doing compound lifts.

In that 6 weeks, I have gained 7 pounds, and apparently gained an inch and a half on my neck (made evident by the new dress shirts I had to buy)...I can also see a noticable difference in the mirror, and people I haven't talked to in a long time have told me they've seen pictures and can tell I've been working my arse off.

The only thing other than going to the gym on a regular basis and a crap diet is the occasional smoothie from Smoothie King. No protein shakes every day, no weird supplements, etc. All it takes is dedication.
