How often should an elementary aged kid be outside playing with friends?

I've been worried about the effect this quarantine has had on my son. He went from having interaction with kids his age all day long to almost zero. We've seen our across-the-street neighbors some, and he's ridden bikes with their 5-year-old daughter. Other than that, it's been hanging out with his 2-year-old sister or his parents.

There's only so much we can do to entertain him or keep him engaged. Most of his school assignments have been on a screen, and my wife and I have had enough work that has led him doing more screen time in the afternoons.

He's getting about 3 or so hours of activity a day. Most of that isn't what he really wants to do (going on a family walk for example).

This isn't healthy. He should be playing hide and seek with the neighborhood kids, practicing with his soccer team, playing toys with a friend from school, having play dates with kids who have hot moms I can.....

...he should be with friends playing mostly outside a hell of a lot more than he's being allowed to.

Anyone else worried about this?

Multiple hours per day when he's not in school. There aren't tons of kids out in your neighborhood right now? I never knew that we had this many kids in ours. It's been nice to see.

Kids his age in China are working 80 hrs/week making iPhones and clock radios. I think he’ll be ok.

I am finding that there are a whole lot of parents who are waiting to be asked to have their kids play with other kids. Make a few phone calls. Your kid will appreciate it. So will your kid’s friends’ parents.

Oh I have been. But the pickings are slim in terms of things to do to keep him entertained. We're going fishing this weekend.

Most parents in our neighborhood are keeping their kids locked up. My wife is strict about it as well. We're not interacting with anyone really.

I guess I'm thinking he's reached the age where he should just go outside and play. There are plenty of kids his age around. They just aren't out. Instead he's cooped up looking for things to do, and there's just not that much to do.

Not really. There's a group of older boys who are riding bikes around, but I doubt they'd want a little kid with them. I think they're around 11 or so.

If he is getting 3 hours of outside activity per day then he is getting more than most kids during normal times FWIW

So allow him to. Will his friends parents not let them go out? If they do then let him go play.

No cousins. I'm an only child and my wife's two brothers are child free.

They won't. We aren't real close with anyone in the neighborhood besides our across-the-street neighbors. They have a daughter that's 5 (my son is turning 7 in a few weeks). They get along fine, but they're pretty strict about coronavirus as well. They allow their daughter to ride bikes with my son but nothing else.

You make it seem like her normally plays with all the kids in the neighborhood in your OP but now you make it seem like he only plays with the neighbor girl...

Yeah, I have 2 young boys and "neighborhood" is a small cluster of 4-5 houses around me, no other family with kids. To make matters worse, a very busy road not far from the house. They play in the backyard a lot, and I take them to the woods or fishing quite a bit. Other than that, they go to their grandparents house who live in an actual neighborhood and play with kids.
