If I had a dog dumb enough to kill itself eating socks, I’d let it.

Funny. I had a number. $300. Then my lab got gored by a deer and I spent $1800 just to see him put down.

Damn that seems high. They must charge more when you want to watch.

Crazy. When I farmed I used to take care of that sort of thing myself for under a dollar. Old and soft these days.

Dogs like kids act out for attention. Get the dog wood bones. You need to replace the socks with a more interesting texture. Also this dog needs more interaction, they’re still a puppy and have a lot of energy.
It’s not as clean as you think because the dog found the ones you missed.
This dog needs your time more than your money.
It sounds like there is too much on the family’s plate from what you described to give a 1 yr old lab the attention it needs. It’s a working breed dog, it needs something to do or it’s going to get into mischief because it’s bored.
My honest take and not being critical.

The pet/vet industry as a whole is one gigantic rip off.

There are certainly parts of it that try to con people out of money, like any industry. But to blanket state this is untrue.
Vets go through undergrad and then 4 years of Vet school that can cost $150-200k. If they practice at an existing clinic and aren't an owner, they are likely to take home $125k.
If they own a clinic, they can maybe make $250k, with all the extra responsibilities of owning a business and dealing with scum of the earth who won't shell out a $100 bill for an animal that would lose their life protecting them.
That's all their choice, but to say that the vet industry is a rip-off is one of the most blatantly false statements you can make. Vets are vets because they love animals. point blank period.

Find another vet.
We've had 3 intestinal blockage surgeries done by 3 different vets over the past 5 years. Cost has ranged from $2-6k with the high end requiring multiple day stays and them having to remove a section of the intestine. Thankfully we have pet insurance that pays 80%.

Yikes dude. the dog only goes after socks because it smells of the person they want to be closer with.
Dumb dogs are bored dogs.
Put down the screen and touch grass with your dog.

100% agree.
It takes its toll emotionally, too.

Did I make the right call? I wasn’t going to pay 7500 potentially 11000, that’s just financially stupid. But I can stomach 2000 since she’s only 1 and has hopefully another decade in front of her.
You did the right thing considering this type of surgery usually has a good outcome and the dog has a lot of life left to live. Would be different if the prognosis was poor or the dog was on its way out. Be grateful to the MIL for helping avoid the worst case scenario. They are also financing options available. Pet insurance should help avoid that next time the sock bandit strikes.
I’ve got two here. One is a sock/textile eater and the other is a paper/cardboard eater. Get the family trained up accordingly and make sure the dog is kenneled up or has a “dog room” they can be in during times you can’t watch them close.

Love dogs but they have turn the art of fleecing owners into a science. For $11000 that's a big no. Even $4000.
this is a bunch of bullshite. It's a dog, were we going to give it artisanal anesthesia made of Japanese horny toad secretions?
Also do not go to a city vet, they are twice as good at fleecing people. I transferred from a city vet to a country vet near my parents. The country vet saw lots of farm dogs and barn cats. My bills went down by 2/3 asap. The city vets think they're on the set of Sex & the City and everbody has a million dollars to spend.

fricking estimate was low end $7500 and high end $11000!! ...

You’ve got a trans cat? Hell, I’ve heard it all now.

I’m sorry but you not getting pet insurance is incredibly dumb on your part.
Your dog has literally eaten more things than you can count and you didn’t see this coming? Very sad situation and I’m glad you got the cost down to where you could have the surgery, but damn you gotta be smarter than that.

For all intents and purposes LOL. His (I have never asked about his pronouns and he has never mentioned it) junk is no longer present. He never seemed to miss it.

I don’t own bored dogs. I think it’s wrong for people to have dogs if they don’t either have time to be their companions or have the ability to let the dog be with other people or dogs when they’re gone. Dogs are pack animals, and shouldn’t be left by themselves in kennels most of the day.
I did it when I lived in an apartment and my wife and I both worked, but I shouldn’t have.

While I love my three GSD. I wouldn't spend that much, but the wife will spend 20k of her money on all of them individually. To me they are just animals. To her they are her kids. We don't have any kids. We are in our mid fifties and I'm all about retirement money. So for me 2k max.

Tough decision. It comes down to quality of life.

My girl will be 16 next week.
Survived a pit bull attack that left her with nerve damage to her front legs and also a blood disorder where she needed a transfusion from racing Greyhounds from Mexico.
She's had the Reverse Cough for well over a year now.
Spends her time mostly on her heating pad.
Hardly eats.
Woke up this morning to two spots in the house where she threw up.
Usually she has no problem making it to her doggie door.
It's getting close.

Why is it so hard to keep socks away from the dog? Honestly, I think I could do that. If not on your feet, put up for washing or reuse.
I have a Husky/GSD mix and he would rip the stuffings out of dog toys, ate some, and crapped them out. No more dog toys. Try hiding socks and small things that look like socks.
