My sister and BIL got involved with the dog rescue stuff after Katrina. They now have about 11 dogs (?) and 14 (?) cats. Their vet bills are outrageous. Their whole life has changed because the money they saved for themselves goes to the animals.
To answer the OP questions: Yes to the one time treatment and no to the pills.

1. Is it my fault?

2. Age of animal?

Two variables that heavily impact the decision.

Without those answers, I'll say I'd be hard pressed to spend more than a weeks salary for a dog.

If it was a pricy dog I spent lots of time training for hunting, etc, then that is another variable that bumps up the limit.

General family pet with no utility? Sorry pupper. Have a raw steak and go to sleep.

I may be an a-hole, but I'm not spending a lot of money to save my pets. If the cost doesn't affect my family to much then I would consider it. But when we get to significant amount of money no way.

If they are in pain I will end it for them right then, if not I will comfort them till time comes but I'm not blowing resources to extend life a little.

My parents rescued a dog that required surgery.
After 2 failed surgeries they decided to put her down, I talked them into seeing what LSU said.
Vet said he was 99% sure she would never have issue again if he did the surgery.
2500.00 later the dog is totally fine.

I couldn't extend my dogs life just to do it but if the treatment / surgery fixed the issue I think I'd have a limit of 3k.

We got our Schnorkie from the St. Tammany Humane Society. We would take her there to the low cost clinic. We brought her in for a a teeth cleaning that they had to put her under for. They kept her there all day and hurried through the procedure right before we were due to pick her up. Got there and she was still all wet. Paid them, brought her home and she started wheezing badly. She had aspirated during the procedure or recovery. They told us to bring her to Med Vet. She almost didn't make it with a hole in her lung. $4500 and 7 days later she made it through. She was only 7 and we were willing to go pretty far to save her. There were a few touch and go days and the money didn't really bother me too much but it would have sucked to spend that and bring home a dead dog. I don't know how I would handle terminal illness though.

$1000 one time is much different than $800 every 2 weeks

I spent almost 10K keeping my bloodhound alive last year
you do what you are able to do and what you think is best

it's a personal decision
I have no regrets

BTW if it's a bleeding cancer, Yunnan Baiyao works and it's cheap

Our dog was 5 when he had a slipped disk which paralyzed his back 2 legs. Our choices were to put him down, or spend $5k for surgery, which would probably work, but no guarantees.

We went through with the surgery, spent a few months rehabbing him, mostly getting him in the pool. He was able to walk again within 6 months, and lived til he was 17.

Best $5000 ever spent.

I would keep him comfortable and make the next six months the best of his life. If the chemo won't cure him, I would let him ho peacefully.
