(Assuming you're not financially set and have F U money already anyway)

Is there % salary threshold you'd refuse to cross?

A size/type of housing you'd refuse to downgrade to?

Quality of car you'd refuse to drive?

Etc.

Where would you draw the line? Is there a point where it becomes irresponsible?

honestly, I don't think I am passionate about anything to make me like it enough to take a pay cut to do it. as I see it, if a job doesn't somewhat suck, they wouldn't pay me to do it....

I had a dream job. Money was an issue, so I couldn't continue it

Whatever it takes to support my family. I'm not too proud to do anything.

I don't have a dream job but I look at it this way...if I have to go to work I may as well kick arse at it and make as much money as I can

Former business partner of mine walked away a good six figure income to teach and coach football. He was a litigator with a high stress caseload. Took some sacrifices. His family moved into a much smaller house and his wife went back to work as an RN. Probably took a 60-70% pay cut, but he spends a lot more time with his kids and he's never been happier.

Couldn't take that high of a cut, but I'd do 30% pay cut if the right situation was there.

Five years ago I walked away from a solid position that paid well for the opportunity to do nothing. I live on about half what I previously made, and enjoy every minute of it. After experiencing freedom, I will live in a one room apartment and bike, bus or walk, before I would get another job.

A hell of a lot. I prefer to live simply anyway. I'm getting bogged down with clutter

Define "poor."

Not having a certain salary?

Or not having certain things?

Because one can live simply without necessarily having a poor income.

It's hard to define.

Poor is having an unreliable car, never eating at nice restaurants, living in a shitty apartment, not being able to afford to take a trip on a whim, etc. I can't deal with any of those things.

Eta: it's not about living in the nicest neighborhood or driving a BMW, it's worrying about money.

If I downgraded any further, I'd be homeless!

Well, it gets to a point where your family is your passion and the more money you makes means they are provided for and have opportunities.

If your "hobby" means junior can't go to out of state college to pursue his passion, then you are doing it wrong.

If I could live my dream job, I would be completely fine with living the lifestyle I live right now (small 2br/1bath house, backyard, dog, ugly but reliable car). Sure, I never get to take vacations and can't afford to eat out at nice restaurants, but as the new host of former "Anthony Bordain: Part's Unknown", I think I'd manage.

Life is short. I would take happiness any day over wealth.

Quit a job I made 70k my first year in to move to a job to 40k. I will say I am much happier and I have more free time to do what I want.

I took a 70% cut and never regretted it.

We're all poor to someone wealthy. It's just a matter of perspective.

I live in a 400 sq ft apartment, have a 10 year old car, never eat out, and never take trips but I am pretty happy. Those things aren't important to me. I live a pretty simple lifestyle but the things that make me happy are pretty cheap: beinrg active/playing sports and music. I live pretty simple and save about 45% of my income. I could live differently but have no desire to because 1. I won't be happier 2. Don't want financial pressure on top of me. I recently turned down 20% more money because it just didn't comfortable to me.

Easy for me since I am not married and don't have kids though
