I've heard that only 25-30 grams goes to your muscles in each serving but the extra protein is used in other parts of your body. Have you heard anything like that?

This is correct (for the most part). But you have to take into account body size, body fat and the amount of fats you've eaten along with the protein. Also, physical activity comes into play.

There are a lot of clowns out there going 250+ grams of protein a day from supps and shitting out powder bricks because their bodies can only use so much. If you don't drink enough water, you will actually poop out little bits of powder. Nothing like realizing that second scoop of Gold Standard went straight through your body and is now sitting on top of a turd.

That being said, I'd rather be on the high end than the low end. A general rule is that you should get as much protein as you want from food. 200 grams - 1000 grams. If you're getting it from supplements alone though, you're killing your kidneys, and you'll feel really sluggish throughout the day.

I have heard this as well but I do not think it is true either. This explains a little about how our bodies absorb protein.

Muscle growth is not handcuffed by the amount of protein you digest/absorb rather is limited by the about you can utilize for synthesis.

180 - 250 grams a day for me. eating around 2500 calories a day.

Weighed 185 this morning.

I think it would be tough for me to survive on under 2000 a day. Or I would be losing even more weight than I want to.

ate egg whites for breakfast, tuna lettuce wraps for lunch. Part of that pulled pork they are referencing when I got home wrapped in ham. A spinach and eggwhite omelot for supper. And I was hungry at about midnight, so I made a dozen egg whites.

I don't think your #s are right with those meals.

When your BUN and Creatinine levels become too high and affects your GFR...would be wise to do some bloodwork...just saying. Last thing you'd want is acute renal failure over some excess protein that could have been avoided to begin with.

No...obviously one day or even a few weeks is fine...I'm talking about a consistently high extreme daily protein intake. Some may be able to get by with 1 or 1.5/lb, but someone else may not. It will vary from each individual. I'm just saying, when it starts affecting your kidney functioning and bloodwork, then it's too high.

A high protein diet does not have any negative effect on healthy kidneys though.

Over time it can have residual effects , high protein diets puts stress on even healthy kidneys.

I'm not suggesting the average person have ARF or Rhabdo but to say "it did not have any negative effect" is incorrect.

Home > Health High-Protein, Low-Carb Diet Safe for Kidneys June 1, 2012 By MIKAELA CONLEY Mikaela Conley More from Mikaela » Health Reporter via GOOD MORNING AMERICA, WORLD NEWS For decades, medical experts have been concerned that high-protein, low-carb diets like Atkins could be damaging to the kidneys, but a new study found that this isn't the case in otherwise healthy patients. Researchers from the Indiana University School of Medicine compared the effects of such a diet to that of a standard low-fat diet in 307 obese people who did not suffer from kidney disease or other chronic illnesses. After a two-year period, they found that the high-protein, low-carb diet didn't cause noticeable harmful effects on healthy obese patients' kidney function compared to obese people who followed a low-fat diet. "Despite decades of concerns about low-carb, high-protein diets that may cause kidney damage in healthy people, there were no signs that this would be the case after a 2-year period," said Dr. Allon Friedman, lead author of the study, published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

Current studies show it doesn't.
