Ours was in the shade with water while were were outside last summer, but started showing signs of a heat stroke. We took her to the vet school's emergency room. Her temp was over 110 and her blood vessels were starting to rupture leaving bruises all over her body. If you've seen it, you'd know it. It cost us $4,000 but they brough her back from the dead. She's a little dumber now, but still the same good girl she always was.

Does your vet own the practice or does private equity? We moved to a rural vet that private equity hasn't ruined yet and it's SO much better.

As much as I could afford.

And then some if I'm being honest.
We have only 1 left at the moment, but my dog is a member of the family and would die for me, my wife, and children. He's there when we're sad or sick and knows something is wrong and comforts us. He checks on my kids in their beds at night, he walks my wife to her room when she goes to bed before me, then comes back out and lays at my feet until I go to bed. Then he sleeps at the foot of our bed, with the occasional night time patrol of the house. Everywhere that we can bring him, we do.
We've been very blessed with some amazing dogs.

I will tell you how I feel:
My dog is about 9 or 10 now. Was incredibly healthy the first 8 years of his life.
Now he has a bladder issue where his muscles aren't strong enough to pee sometimes so he gets backed up and has seizures.
I went to a neurologist twice, one for each of the above. The first time no answer, the second time they went on and did some cardiologist testing. They didn't find any cardio issues so they wanted to do an MRI to look for a tumor.
I stopped it there. I had spent about $5k on just those 2 things and if he got an MRI, the only thing I would know was whether he had a tumor or some growth on his brain or that it may be adult onset epilepsy. It would cost me 5k minimum to do that full MRI, and if he did indeed have something else, I wasn't going to spend 15-20k for removal since he's already 9+.
It's been about 8 months since he had his first seizures (took him in during the OSU/PSU game last season) and nothing worse. If he gets worse I'll deal with it then.
I have prob spent another $3k over the last 18 months on draining his bladder when it gets backed up. They want to run tests which I have since put a stop to and it's $250 or so every time. He backs up 4-6 times a year I would say. He's worth that much to me

As much as required. My dog is at the vet as we speak.
My daughter is a Vet Oncologist who will practice in South Florida. Pets get MRIs, chemo, radiation therapy, etc.

I once spent 1200 on a dog I found only she died before I could ever get her home.
She had a mangled ear. Got that fixed. Day to go home from rig she got bit by a rattlesnake. Died after 4 days. Third day the vet called saying she was doing better and I could come back to get her. Died next morning.
RIP sweet Whitney. Found her on lake Whitney shoreline in texas

Who downvotes this? At least reply and give a reason. That's exactly what happened.
After it happened, my mother in law and sister in law both got it also.
Within a year mother in laws dog broke its front leg and sister in laws ate a ball and needed exploratory surgery.
Ins paid out both in full, besides $100 deductible.

I paid about $2k for surgery on one to try to give me more time with her. She loved 2 months well, then went down quickly. No regrets for me.

We have a new dog. I’ve had dogs most of the years of my life and must say never really got the connection some have, till now. This little dog has me in love w him. He is awesome. Hell to potty train, smart, stubborn as an old man, picky eater. I’ll spend a bunch to keep him healthy and around.

My dog died from Cushing's. I'd pay anything to have him back.

Lost my GSD 15 years ago, and it still hurts. She was incredible, set the bar high for me.
I would have paid everything I had at the time to keep her around me.
