Make 40K , which is vastly underpaid in my field because I decided to work for the state to get some experience under my belt after my masters.

If I stay with the state, I will be making around 60K within 5 years (got in at a high salary at a low position).

Of course I could go work in the private industry and make a shite-ton more money, but I would be working numbers in a field I don't really care to much about.

You all are some rich frickers. I chose the wrong degree That being said my total bills (obviously living on my own) take up roughly 40% of my income.. counting insurance, food, gym, rent, utilities, internet, gas, etc.

it could be a lot worse 35k. i'll tack on another 5k in a year but i'll probably never make more than 60k a year.

Speaking about your income, even on a message board, is pretty fricking trashy.

I was always taught not to discuss such matters growing up, and I was shocked to hear how many coworkers openly discuss this. Highly inappropriate.

This is a myth propagated by employers to keep salaries suppressed and by broke asses to keep their wives.

Not if your industry has relatively standardized compensation. Everyone has an idea of what others are making. It is not appropriate to discuss. Surprised I have to defend this.

I was just trying to think of a profession that starts in the mid 30's and maxes out around the 60's. A teacher sounded about right (depending upon location).

Your location says Uptown Dallas, so everyone probably says they make 35k million a year.

Everybody likes to know where they stand. And brag if its high. Plus, humans aren't satisfied unless we have more than others. People can be perfectly fine with their income and then be completely fricking disgusted if they find out an acquaintance makes more. They just wanna see how they stack up.
