You’re thinking of this wrong. Sure, you can find someone to stamp a piece of paper for free. But notaries in Louisiana have a lot more abilities than most other states - they do a lot of transactional things that you’d need a lawyer for in other states. Notaries can do that type of work and usually charge less than lawyers, which is where a notary would make their money.

As a lawyer, I’ll stamp your affidavit for free but I’m not drafting any documents for you. Enter notaries...

I’ve been to a notary maybe 4 times in my life. 3 times was in a trailer office/home and the 4th was a woman who works at a pool company.

Common Law Notary (other 49 states) - Can stamp your printed out Legal Zoom document.

Civil Law (Louisiana) Notary - Can draft legal documents and execute them.

A lot of people will try to save $200 by bypassing a lawyer. Maybe 9 times out of 10 it works out alright. That 10th time can be a MFer though when you find out you don't have clear title or something equally vexing.

I know 4 people at work, plus my neighbor and my credit union are notaries. All charge nothing. This in a town of less than 30k.

I have a notary next to my office that I use about 3 or 4 times a week. At first she didn’t charge me anything but after a while she started charging me $20 a pop.

At this pace your going to be broke, baw.

Lets say a nike golf shirt (branded) is $60 bucks. You would need to notarize 12 documents at $5 bucks a pop to cover that one shirt...

The marketplace is way to saturated with baws who notarize as part of other services, and frankly everyone knows someone who has a notary friend.

A notary if serious can make pretty good money in Louisiana. All title transfers whether movable or immovable require a notary signature/stamp. Notary Publics can also prepare contracts and create trusts. Also you can close real estate transactions....I would also suggest getting bonded to do abstracting if you are going the full time route....it's not terribly expensive. I know financial planners that use some notaries to create trusts for their higher dollar clients and you can charge almost 4 figures for preparing one and you can charge a notary fee on top of it and all notary fees in Louisiana are not subject to income tax

Some of the more ambitious notaries also handle title renewal on automobiles and can help remove flags from your license and can issue new licenses and new plates. If you know any car dealers, that's a good place to get things started. Every sale is going to require a notary.

If you are serious, it can make you some good money, but don't quit your day job at first

Texas and Mississippi notaries don't make much, but they cannot do all of the things a Louisiana Notary Public does the average pas rate for the Notary Exam in Louisiana is about 18%. Can a Texas Notary create and execute wills, trusts and contracts......the answer is no. In Louisiana a Notary public is so much more than a stamper.

can't believe this is a serious thread, highly doubt it's possible to make any income from being a notary, if you have a bank account it's free, and everybody is a notary, have had a shite ton load of things notarized in my time, have never paid for it

Ever bought a house......the lawyer or closing agent charges a fee.

In Louisiana,Notary Publics are authorized to create partitions, wills, protests, donations, matrimonial contracts, conveyances and trusts. Create....not just sign and stamp . Louisiana is a civil law state not a common law one. A decent notary in Louisiana doing it full time can make 50-60K a year a year just half assing it provided they have some regular clients. In Houston they get to live under the SW Freeway because they are just professional witnesses that affix their name to the document

Not true- notary fees aren’t subject to self employment tax, but you still have to pay income tax on your notary earnings.

You can also get into online notary pools like The Closing Group, and do in home refis with companies like Quicken Loans. The pay seems good at first ($75-100 per closing), but when you take into account that many loan packages are 200+ pages that have to be printed twice (one to sign, one for the borrower), and the amount of time allotted for travel, sometimes it doesn’t add up. I did it while I was between jobs, and it was a nice supplement, but I couldn’t have continued to do that full time and support my family

My wife is one. She is also a loan officer at a local bank. They gave her a 10% yearly raise and she does some side work (no sex. Just acts of donations, quit sale deeds, etc.) for some of her clients. Depending what she does, she charges $100-300. That’s about half the going rate here based on what a lawyer charges.
