No, but to suggest increased polarization isn't present is not true either. Many watch and read media that support their personal viewpoints, more people live in solid Red or Blue districts now than ever before, and the lack of discourse in debate has been dead and continues to decline.
Yea, and if a red person lives in a blue area, or is just around blue people for a short period of time, the chances of them being murdered goes up exponentially. Is that a product of social media or the environment that has been created?

I’ll go as far as saying it’s the sole reason for our problems.
Look at pre social media USA. What was different? The news media was still there. We still had the 24 hour news cycle. Social media is the main difference. News media have learned how to feed into it to push their narratives and we’re too fricking retarded as a society to not let them.

Well, smartphones too.
No one was sitting in front of a TV 247.

Anything less than multiples of 100 x is probably not enough.

The people who act like we haven’t had problems before social media need to read a fricking book
quote:
The Anxious Generation is a 2024 book by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt that argues the rise in teen mental illness is caused by a shift from a "play-based childhood" to a "phone-based childhood". Haidt explains how the decline of free play and the rise of smartphones and social media have negatively impacted children's neurological and social development, leading to increased anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.
How's that for a "fricking book"?

social media, non stop internet access and 24 hours news is going to end up being the death of america, and maybe a lot of other countries.
it is too much and everyone feels like they HAVE to take a side, make it their identity, and buy into their side of it 100% .
All you hear from both sides are how the other is EVIL, NAZI, COMMIE, SATANIST, it is ridiculous and it is why I tuned out a while back.

Quit social media (other than TD) several months ago. I’m calmer and more thoughtful without algorithms filling my head with bullshite presented to me for no other reason than to make someone some money.
Whole lot of us need a good detox.

I’m typically engaged in social media mostly because I live 12 hours away from all of my family and most of my friends and it’s an easy way for me to keep up with everyone. I’m about done though. Im so fricking sick of all of it at this point

A history book. Not an opinion piece from a “social psychologist”. Whatever the hell that is. I’m sure you can tell us

The quickest way to solve the problem?
Require a government issued ID to get a social media account. You must post under your real name with the picture on your ID.
Take away anonymity, a lot of big talkers won’t be talking so big. Also helps with combatting the millions of bots developed to drive engagement by pretending to be human.

No one is saying there were no issues before social media, but there is plenty of data to show social media exacerbates issues in people with already fragile minds.

I’ve been a teacher in the public school system for going on 7 years now. That’s not an opinion piece.

Okay guys. Good luck with your narrative. I hope we figure out how to keep fragile minds from getting triggered.

It's a huge reason.
Weird people used to just be weird. shite I was a weird kid, I shutter to think what would have happened if I was able to be in weird Reddit Subreddits. We just had video game message boards.

Thanks to the abundance and scope of the internet, tons of people are incredibly out of touch with the real world. shite I spend too much time online, but there’s so many more people that practically live on the internet. It’s scary honestly.
