I know no one has an exact answer but how much in your opinion has it helped? Seems like outside of sporting events and concerts, people have still been going to the places where they will be exposed to large amounts of people, such as wal mart, gas stations, and drive thru’s. One thing I can definitely understand helping is if there has been less travel between cities and states, especially the hot bed areas such as New York. But if you quarantine yourself all week but then go to wal mart where hundreds of people are and thousands have been that same day, how much good did quarantining really do as far as limiting exposure? Also how are drive thru’s suppose to be safe when that person that handles the food and money has come in contact with hundreds if not thousands of people that same day? Is it possible the measures we have taken aren’t the reason this thing seems to be WAY below the projections as far as case numbers and especially deaths by this point?

A whole lot.

Not touching each other and staying far from each other is something we can continue to do as we re-open businesses too (while continuing to isolate vulnerable).

We can open shite back up and do ~90% of the stuff that has worked so far. I don't understand how people don't understand that.

Control freak governors/ mayors: "Not enough"

People who want to go work for a living and care about the bills they have to pay: "Not that much"

Social distancing isn’t supposed to get contact down to zero. Of course people are still out and about but it is a small fraction of what it was before everything shut down. While you may think there are tons of people out, it’s really a small amount when compared to a month ago.

What they should be saying is "It has helped a lot and we can continue social distancing while also re-opening businesses".

That is a much more effective argument.

Some but not to the extent that 1 million were going to die or even 500,000 if we’d have continued business as usual. If you believed that, I feel bad for you.

Yea but those people that may be staying home are still going to the areas that they do normally that put them around the most people, especially grocery stores. So if you go in wal mart and are around thousands of people, what good did it do that you didn’t go to a restaurant and be around 50 more?

This. We can be a long way toward normal without adding much to the risk. Common sense practices is most of it. Sure there will be some additional cases, but that is going to happen anyway.

A lot of the high risk folks haven't been leaving the house at all. Many others are still doing those things, but way less frequently. Not being in crowded restaurants and movie theaters is probably a pretty big help as well.

With that said, I don't think there is anyway to know how much any of this has helped and I'm ready for a phased opening back on May 1.

The virus doesn't infect everyone it's around.

Social distancing first reduces the number of people you come into contact with, so you're less likely to contact an infected person.

Most people think of that only in terms of themselves, but it's about the population as a whole. Cutting back across the board reduces the circles the virus can travel in and keeps transmission as contained as possible.

It's all about reducing percent of transmission, not the idea we can get to zero. If there's a reduction in social circles, an infected person passes to fewer people. Those people then pass it on to fewer people.

There's an estimated R0 of between 3 and 6. If social distancing stays on the low end of that, it has a snowball effect in limiting spread.

Right, obviously can’t be taken down to zero, but if one goes to wal mart and is around thousands of people, then go to a drive thru that the same person has been handling everyone’s food and money, how much more exposure is it if that person had gone to work in an office that day that has 20 people in it? Like .01 percent less exposure?

What Walmart do you go to that fits thousands of people?

But this would be more like thinking you’ve greatly reduced your chance of getting an std by sleeping with 999 people as opposed to 1000 people.

Hundreds at a time, easily thousands of people pass through per day.

Bruh I have done nothing different since this started. Except for the fact that I can’t go out to eat/drink. I have get togethers with the same people. Hell even shared some bottles of whiskey. Nothing has happened. They aren’t sick. I’m not sick. This is all such bullshite.

Carona lives on plastic for 3 days.

How many people do you think go in and out of stores in 3 days?
