How Much Hard Drive Space Does a Movie Take up?

I have an employee who used 40 Gig of data on his company phone last month. I can't imagine what the hell he is doing, unless he is streaming some shite.
Can someone give me an idea of how much data we are talking about when you download a song?
How about a movie?...

Depends on the resolution. 720 will be a little less than a gig for most movies.

Movie is about 1 gig on computer. That's a shite ton of porn.

This is what I am having trouble with...how the hell can someone ring up over 40 gig of data in a single month and still have time to do anything else?...

3 hours of watching video per weekday...

What does any of that have to do with hard drive space?

A coworker was using his phone as a hotspot recently to stream Netflix. The bill was well over $1000 for the month. The company had to threaten to cancel all accounts before version would dismiss it.

Netflix can blow though over a gig an hour.

its not hard drive its streaming data

Compression isn't that great. So typically, the size of a file is how much data is needed to stream it. 1 gig on a hard drive = 1 gig of data used. It's not 1 to 1, but when you're talking HD streaming, it's going to be damn close.

Instagram and snapchat will kill a data plan.

I have no intuition concerning just how much data a gig is...trying to get an idea versus something that I can compare it to.

Taking up space isn't same thing as using data.

that is kinda what I was guessing....but at that rate, we are still talking about over 40 hours of streaming...

From Netflix: By HD I'm assuming they mean 1080p
quote:
“Watching movies or TV shows on Netflix uses about 1 GB of data per hour for each stream of standard definition video, and up to 3 GB per hour for each stream of HD video.”
Note that these numbers apply whether you’re streaming the show to your TV, computer, or mobile device.
