Interesting....any idea how much data a normal person would use on a monthly basis with either of those?

I average 10-15 gigs a month. I think I'm higher than the average consumer though.
Most of my friends average 2-6 gigs a month.

No, I run my phone for a Hotspot for my pc to send emails, browse, etc...
I stream music (Pandora or Amazon music) around 2-8 hours a day without wifi. I guess that's the bulk of my data usage.
But, I also use my phone to browse the www a lot. Like right now. I'm sure it's just my constant usage of it that pushes it to the 15 gigs.
I've used it to stream Netflix before. The first season of big bang theory pushed me close to 25 gigs that month. Around 20 25 minute episodes, probably a safe guess that's 10 gigs.
40 gigs is a lot of data, but certainly not hard to reach if you think you're being given free WiFi through the phones Hotspot.

Streaming brah. I don't know anyone who downloads movies to a phone.

Maybe he's using the phone for a hotspot. 40g is a hell of a lot for one person to use.

He's looking at videos on how to stage job accidents.
