Internships mostly help with contacts and getting a job at that place when graduating.

Depends on the industry. In most, they aren't viewed as experience but they will help you to get in the door. At the end of your first year you won't be viewed as a 1 1/2-2yr employee if that's what you're asking.

Internships are invaluable in gaining an understanding of the real world applications of your degree. Sure I could have sat in a classroom learning about pay apps and cash analysis.

Instead I worked an internship for 3 years, three summers and three winters full time in the field, 6 semesters part time in the office. If you can't see the value in that, from a hiring perspective, then it's not surprising you are having trouble with your job search.

Eta: that was to volod not you atx

E7 doesn't need internships.

Eh, to be fair they had one either as an airman, seaman or a private.

Plus sadly a lot of vets don't get the jobs they deserve when they get out.

I have a job. I am just looking for a different one.

I agree with you that experience is very valuable. It is second only to having a very strong connection with an employer.

I was just arguing that regular interns are not the same as Co oping (which is literally what you were doing for those 3 years). If you are constantly working in your field of study while in school, you will achieve the best results.

Unfortunately, most people are not granted the opportunity to do that. And I use "granted" in the since that a company has to allow you to work for them. Average person has no real bargaining power.

This isn't a "make excuse" line. Im simply stating the reality.

I have found that if you intern for a company you don't need the 3 years or whatever of experience to be hired. As others have said though the time you interned doesn't count towards experience for promotions ECT. within the company.

1. Networking
2. Familiarity with various elements of the career you are choosing.

3. Getting your name out there: who ya know type of thing.

4. Resume builder.

I've been out of college awhile, but I don't know why internships are not exponentially more popular especially during the summer. Many companies undervalue them. How many places can you get a college level of intelligence for $10-15/ hour? It's a great way to vet people, assist with data entry, get cheap assistance, etc.

With so many people going to college and college actually teaching so little of the actual job, it's a fantastic way to pair an employee to an employer. If you hired 5 interns every summer for a cost of $20,000 and then picked 1-2 to hire from, that is money incredibly well spent over simply going by a resume and a couple job interviews.

I did several internships in DC and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. Invaluable connections.
