How much easier is it to lump everyone that agrees on 1 thing into 1 category?

i find myself falling into this trap all the time, someone will make one statement and it influences what category i group them into and ruins the whole dialogue.
the Brees situation is a perfect example. he honestly didn't say anything wrong, but the way he said it ("disrepecting the flag") people jumped all over him.
all it does it shut down the actual conversations and cause people to quit listening to the message he was trying to get across.
is it something that is hardcoded into us or a learned behavior? i can argue all day and it doesnt affect me personally, but i know so many people that as soon as you disagree with them they shut off and take it as a personal attack. its honestly one of the least productive attributes that seems to be more common than not

There is a dearth of critical thinking in all matters today, from both sides. I’d say five to seven percent of all Americans can objectively assess a situation and make a rational determination.

As a follow up, please note how it’s common knowledge now that we have a systemic racial problem. No one of note will argue that we do not. It’s a given.

His words sounded harsher than they actually were.
People conflated
LeBron in 2016:
They essentially say the same thing, it's just Brees' words were much more alienating since he used the word 'never' and due to the timing of his response. But the fact that he got pressured into apologizing for his own beliefs when they weren't wrong or hurtful in any way besides to people who are overly sensitive is just outright ridiculous. Lost a lot of respect for him for that.

He had the audacity to be white and have an opinion in America in 2020.
