My only experience was with my FIL. He had a plot already and some 10K burial/life ins policy. I sat down with my Wife, MIL, and Funeral Lady. I kept quite while wife and MIL picked out what they wanted. The funeral lady was steering them to certain items so as to get that bill as close as possible to 10K. I told her just because there is 10K in insurance we didn't have to spend it all on the funeral. She gave me a look that indicated she wished she was planning my funeral. You got to watch those funeral folks some of them are some greedy bastards that will take advantage of grieving family.

Told the wife I want to go out with a Viking funeral on the lake. Have bunch of rednecks shoot flaming arrows at the raft I'm on until it goes up in flames. Afterward everyone can have a BBQ or Crawfish boil (if in season) and drink beer

At least $10k for embalming, holy joe, vault, casket, limo ride, etc. Plan on more if you are crossing state lines or driving a great distance from mortuary to hole.
Figure on buying a shitload of death certificates, too, if you have assets and an estate.

My paw paw died early September but I am unsure of the costs. He had the casket catholic mass prior to his burial behind our church.

I got tasked with overseeing a short notice funeral of a friend that left three young daughters, no wife, he was an organ donor, and when you donate, they take everything, organs, big bones, everything, I viewed the remains post donation, it wasn't pretty, kind of like a boneless chicken from Hebert's in Maurice before they stuff it

What do poor families do when one of their members dies? Are there government programs for funeral and burial costs?

Cremation fee alone for my mom 3 years ago was about $1900 (in BR). No funeral, no fancy box, & not counting the plot-type niche we put her & step-dad into together. I think that hole was another $3000.
We had a memorial service at our church, which was a minimal fee--I think we just paid the organist and the janitor a small amount.

How do you feel about the poster above saying they chopped your loved one up before they cremated her?
(It's complete bullshite, by the way, but this is the second time I've seen him spew it recently.)

First, it isn't bullshite. I read it somewhere. Second, if you are willing to unceremoniously broil your loved one in a man sized Bud's Broiler's oven then why would you care if they were quartered first?

Doesn't really bother me, no creepier than embalming and having an open casket with a body that doesn't resemble the living person, IMO. And I was following their wishes, so it wasn't really up to me anyway.

If you have kids, you definitely need life insurance but you probably don't need 1 mil plus of life insurane. most people would better off investing the premiums, so their money can grow as opposed to go to the insurance shareholders.
I don't sell insurance but you're kidding yourself if you think the average American doesn't need 1 mil of life insurance.
Also, I should have said to buy term. Never buy any form of permanent life insurance.
