Typical OT for someone who doesn’t work in an industry to argue with someone who does work in an industry and be totally convinced that they’re right.

He told us the guys base hourly pay and the number of days he could work in a row. The guy would have to work literally every hour possible and the only way to get to that number is with bonus pay

Mingo signs the front of those checks, not the back

You’re right, he’s wrong. Good job buddy

That would get you to right at $250k, so a lot less than you said. And again, no extra days off than what is required.
Yeah, not counting holidays they worked, built in overtime, bonuses and double time days. The 1700 hours is what we’re looking at. He had some days off. Not many though. But he didn’t care about being off. He was trying to make as much as possible that year.

Starting pay at the refinery I work at is $47, top hourly pay is $57. This will change April 1st as we get a 4% cost of living(contract) raise. We get a 3 to 4% raise every year.

Can someone explain to me like I'm five exactly what a plant operator does? I have no idea.

Depends on the place..
Catch samples. Verify insteumention, prepare equipment for work, troubleshoot to some extent, resolve/fix problems when they are small so they don't get big.
They are people who run plants/refineries via consoles and computers and such. Operators would be seen as their eyes and ears outside on the actual unit.

IF you're gonna spend some time in school take industrial controls/instrumentation. Not only will you make more you won't be a retarded operator.
Let me one up you…
If you are going to spend some time in school, get into Project Controls. Good money, minimal sweat

I would agree with most of the responses. I came from the boilermaker side into operations with a
P-tech and a bachelors. I moved into a day position after about 5 years, but that depends on the plant you go to and how they are structured.
Top pay in for chemical plant operators is around $50/hr. If you do not want to do shift work and are willing to go to school, an instrumentation degree is the way to go. If you want to move into operations you should start applying, we will interview anyone with 5+ years of plant experience, or a P-Tech, or a bachelors.

Last year I made over 200 with less than 900 hrs of OT. Took advantage of some premium pay opportunities, got involved with a couple of boondoggles.

Everyone likes to shite on operators and the plant life. I’ve been working for xom for 8 years. Never made under 150k. Will be a multi millionaire when I retire and have great benefits. I’m drinking beers around a fire on a Sunday night because I’m off for the next 7 days. It’s pretty great.
ETA: also I don’t work outside or in operations. Lab 4 life.

900 hours of OT is still a lot. Every single operator that I know that has children is running themselves ragged to maintain their lifestyle while missing most of their kids important moments.

I’m sure you can do the math but 900 hours a year is around 6 12 hour shifts a month. The schedule only has you working 14-15 days a month. The problem isn’t the amount of days, it’s not taking the time to do things with your kids. Someone on a Monday thru Friday schedule that works 5 days a week will have worked 22 days in December. A lot of operators I know don’t want to do those things with their kids and use working as an excuse.

I have an instrumentation degree from sowela. What they don’t tell you in school is how hard it is to get a job in house. They all want 5+ years of experience and to get that you’re working 13&1 construction jobs. But to answer the op’s question in lake Charles you start out at around $35-38 and get a raise every 6 months until you’re at around $45-48 and then gradually increase until you’re in the mid $50’s at least that’s what I’ve been told

Damn that’s it? Only 20 extra hours of work a week for the entire year? What a steal

Those plant operators make so much money that they are buying Cybertrucks instead of F-250s these days.
