Live in Orange, Texas. Been doing Boilermaker work the past 6 years and thinking about getting a P-tech degree whether at Sowela or LIT.
How much do these guy start off at and how much do they make 5 years down the road?
Any of you guys know someone that works in these areas and have a ballpark number to how much they make?
Supposedly they pay better in Texas because the operators are union while the Louisiana ones are not.

That depends on the plant, not the state. LA has some plants that are union and some that are not. There are even plants owned by the same company where one is union and another down the road is not.
Usually there's a pay bump at regular intervals until you reach top pay. Depending on other benefits offered, top pay is prob around $40-50/hr for operators.

Here to see if this devolves into a WFH thread.

Roughly I say starting $28hr, top at $50hr top on avg.
Like mention big differences in type of chemical plant, individual site, and work history.
Example I have 2 coworkers. Same level of pay.
One works a lot overtime and made 170k ish this year.
Other guy made 120k ish with no OT. Difference can also how payed....OT after 8 hr a day or 40 hrs a week, callout and holiday pay if worked, Double time pay, Detail pay...etc.
On paper we here make same as 2 plants surrounding us.
But they typical clear more per year then us with same amount of hours/overtime by 10%.

The real answer of the answer you’ll get from the Ot that doesn’t account for working 1200 hours of OT?

Instrument tech is $110-150k. Ops probably close. Depends on OT but I’m quoting off base pay

IF you're gonna spend some time in school take industrial controls/instrumentation. Not only will you make more you won't be a retarded operator.

From the information I have gathered the average pay is from mid to low $30’s to start and then high 40’s to mid $50’s top out. Some might be slightly more or less. Usually, the non union plants pay a bit more in an effort to keep unions away. That’s true for Louisiana and Texas from what I’ve seen. Yearly pay is dependent on the amount of overtime as people have said but it’s fairly easy to make $150+ when you’re at $50 an hour. Once you factor in built in overtime and holidays you work you only need like 3 or 4 days of overtime a month to go well over $150k a year.

Starting upper 30’s topped out upper 50’s. Some plants are union some plants are not. Between all of them pay would vary a couple of dollars here or there. Most yearly checks I’ve seen this year are between 130-145 with a rough average of 300hrs overtime
