I'm sure it depends what you do. Are you talking about a chemical engineer with a Phd working the same job as one with a bachelors degree?

Depends on what industry. Probably about 80k starting on the low end. More like 110-120k if you are in a major oil company. I have a phd in Che so I am not just pulling numbers out of my arse.

What would be the purpose of getting a PhD unless you wanted to teach?

Well many ceo's of major oil companies have phd's.

But mostly to work in r&d for major companies. Most people who get PhDs in engineering go to industry.

I have a PhD in chemistry and work in R&D for a F100 company. Not a Chem E, but most hard sciences look for PhDs

Doctorates in Science and Engineering are basically required to work in R&D ventures unless you want to be stuck in the lab.

You're jealous he got a phd from berkeley ? That's not something that just falls into your lap. He worked hard for that.
