Most farmers plant corn, wheat, peanuts, etc throughout the year on top of cotton.

Also irrigation almost doubles the yeild with half the effort.

Mirrors maybe?

Irrigation is twice the effort. I work harder physically irrigating than during planting and harvest.

As far as no till goes, it definitely has places that it’s the way to go, but it’s not in LA Rice Country and the ArkLaMiss Delta. I think we could make some improvements in the way some of the tillage is done and incorporate some cover crops, but I don’t believe in widespread, full blown, no till in the Delta.

I'm guessing we have the same friend

Also, rice farmers that rotate with beans can no till. We have in the past.

We haven’t used any. We’ve had a couple people out this fall talking about it, but we haven’t sat down and really looked into it.

That’s on my list for something to read up on during the winter months.

Is cotton your primary crop? How many acres? Do you have current soil and water analysis? What system do you use for watering?

Couldn't you use metal or mirrors to reflect the photons from the sun into whichever level you wanted. Photons are what drive photosynthesis not necessarily the light itself. Mirrors and metal might not be cheap at first but would require a lot less money to maintain than electricity.

Cotton, corn, and soybeans. 3600 acres. Soil Samples are done every fall after crop is harvested. We then apply lime and P, then work it. Apply K in the Spring before planting. We don’t have have any water analysis data. We use center pivots, furrow irrigation, and use a re-lift pump to pump out of a natural lake.

I would like to provide you with some material to read but I don’t know how to contact you. and I think it would be against board policy to post it here.

The entire rotation, or just the soybeans?

Rice-beans-rice with no tilling. Only did it once or twice when beans were bringing good $. Back to crawfish.

Impressive. I know of no one that is no-tilling the entire rice/soybean rotation. Only the soybeans are no-tilles typically.

Oui oui. Like I said, only did it once I believe. Have to have perfect harvest conditions which doesn't happen often.
