Average commission on a new car is a minimum commission of usually $100-200. Gross could be higher on used to make some more. But a $1,000 commission would be a huge outlier.

Average car salesmen sell about 10-12 cars/month. You can make a decent living off that. Good ones can sell 20 plus and make a good living. If you've been doing it a long time anywhere and can follow up you should be selling 20 a month without having to take ups.

So it's not a percentage of selling price?

Since their commission is not based on selling price and you appear to be in the know, would offering the salesman a cash (2 -3 hundred), off the books gratuity if you end up buying from him be an effective strategy to actually get a great deal on a new car?

Thats correct. Salesmen get paid off the gross, selling price-cost. Which most of the time on new vehicles results in a minimum commission.

Unfortunately, cash on the side to a salesman likely wont get you anywhere. In most places a salesman has to get the numbers from a manager.

If you sale 20 cars a month at $200.00 a car = $4,000 a month working 70 hours a week plus every Saturday and late evenings

$16.00 an hour, I assume no benefits and you never see your family

$32,000 a year - not enough to be on the OT

There aint no way. Most likely a percentage of the profit. Hence why the have to run everything by the sales manager (i.e. the keeper of the margins)

Spoke with a young guy who worked dealership finance in Houston and told me at dealerships like Greenway Plaza Mercedes etc. that those dealerships are considered the "Major leagues" and salesmen have to bring a solid resume and most restrictive of all get hair drug tested, but they all make 6-figures+

If you're selling 20/month. You will have some good grossing used vehicle sales in there, so you're average will be a good bit higher than 200 per unit. Also, most everywhere will have a bonus plan for higher volume, which 20 would probably hit a couple bonuses. If you're averaging 20/month you are probably around 100k. Dealerships do have benefits. We cover 90% of the employee's health care and have a matching retirement plan. You're right about the long hours though.

Former car salesman

New and used is different

When I sold Nissan's the most u can make off a sale is at best 1300 or so. Most are going to be in the 100-300 range and a few will be mini deals (100 min per car sale)

But when u hit 10 sales all ur sales retroactive go from 25% to 30% that's abouy 500-1000 there then there is a 1000 bonus at 20 sales

Most I made selling new cars I sold 32 cars one month and made 7500 one month

Used cars there is more mark up u got stupider clients with shite credit who are just happy u can get them in a car. I sold a jag s type and made 4300 once.

I used to do tent sales on the east coast of Florida only worked fri-sunday and the most I made in a month was 23,500.

U guys don't know shite about car lots lol

Every dealer has a designated internet sales guy. You people buying online and shite are only dealing with him he knows he isn't going to make profit and will sell 30-40 a month and hit bonuses. All u smart internet sales guys go to one person. As a salesman I only deal with ups

I'm an IT admin for an Auto Group. My brother is a salesman.

You get 25% of profit if the deal makes over $1500. Under $1500 profit is a mini deal $100.

At 10 you get an extra 5% as stated above. At 13 you get another 5%. At 17 you get another 5%.

My brother also gets $100 on a pre-paid credit card for every new Kia he sells. That money is from Kia directly.

Aged units also will have a $100 to $500 bonus depending on how old they are.

Salesmen have money coming in from everywhere.

So cash to the manager and/or skip the sales talk and deal with the manager.

I sold Toyota for 6 months and Dodge for a year. I sold more Toyotas, but made more at Dodge because the domestics had more markup. We had a $200 minimum plus Chrysler spiffs. Never again will I sell cars though.

dodges are the best. damn near every car has rebates. that's the only bnew car you can relaly make money off of. if you don't give them the rebate lol it's like selling a used car lol.

if you can sell you can make money selling anything. i quit because of the culture, the hours and i was training myself to be a progarmmer and only started selling cars to learn how to sell

Will get someone in a boat load of trouble with the manufacturer. I don't know what time period you were selling, but FCA audits the hell out of their dealers to make sure stuff like this doesn't happen.
