Me. I'm fluent but more conversational when I'm with actual French folks. I don't know all the slang and they talk much faster than I do.

My mom is a French teacher and we are a very French family.

She curses in French and I picked that up when I was younger. I'm sure when I have kids I'll pick that up.

I used to speak it pretty well, but I'm rusty now. Regular french, not cajun. I had to take it in school growing up (in North La., go figure).

I had to take a shitload at LSU as well. 15 hours for a damn humanities degree! At that point I was like, "well may as well get a minor." Nope, would've been 15 more hours!

. Same as me. My Grandmaw wouldn't teach me so her and my uncle could talk about my bad self. Wished I could have learned it back then.

I talked to a woman from France the other day. She said Louisiana French is Old French and she has difficulty understanding it when she is in Louisiana.

She probably has difficulty speaking with her countrymen who live in rural areas of France too.

Most people that I know who speak Cajun French and who have gone to see France tell me they have no problem speaking with the folks in rural France, but in the big cities they can barely understand each other.

Francaise Moderne is not spoken everywhere in France, just like proper English isn't spoken in most places in the US.

Haha. Nice Google try, but your grammar and conjugation is a bit off. Try again.

Google translate Creole/Hatian. It's pretty close.

My grandfather was fluent. He didn't learn english until age 12 or 13. Was a translator during WWII and in his last days stopped speaking english and reverted to french.

My dad remembers some words and phrases. I myself know very little. Kinda sad really.

My late wife grew up in rural St. Landry Parish and French was her first language - she didn't learn English until she started school.

We traveled through Europe and the Middle East and she had no difficulty communicating with the French speakers - yes, some from Paris had trouble with her dialect, but for the most part she had no trouble. She did say the Belgiums who spoke French were the easiest to understand.

Same with mine except parents not wife. Evangeline and St Landry parish, they both still speak it around the house and I know enough to converse back and understand what theyre saying or who theyre talking shite about
Grandma passed away from Alzheimer's and in her last few months she only spoke cajun French

My relatives who went over said pretty much the same thing. They had no or very little trouble understanding Belgians, Nova Scotians, or the rural French people, but Paris was a much different story.

My Dad was from Evangeline Parish and like most Cajuns his age, did not learn English until he started going to school. And as others have said, speaking French on the school grounds was discouraged by punishment.

In Lafayette there is a push to teach it in the public schools. We have a French Immersion Program. One of the FI schools is in my neighborhood and we are thinking about sending my daughter there.
