Shreveport was also known very widely for the "Bossier Strip", a series of nightclubs along Hwy 80. News got around fast with Barksdale Air Force base being essentially next door. (both are in Bossier, but Shreveport is usually referenced).

We were in the French Quarter before one of the LSU vs. Nebraska Sugar Bowls and were talking with a couple from Nebraska. They asked about where the LSU campus was - we told them Baton Rouge. They argued with us that it was in New Orleans.

1. New Orleans only. When I lived in Baton Rouge I would tell people from out of state where I lived, and they would have no idea what I was talking about.

Sin City....or Red River Babylon.

It was known nationwide and Rivaled the Vegas strip at one time.

Shreveport was also well known for it's musicians and the Louisiana Hayride.

Black people in Southern California know of Shreveport and Monroe... you wouldn’t believe how many people grandparents from Northern Louisiana in LA... same for Chicago with small Mississippi towns

That's true. I remember several black kids in High School from Los Angeles that were sent to live with their grandmothers.
Jrue Holiday and his family lived in Ruston back in the middle to late 90's. Aaron who plays for the Pacers now was born in Ruston. I believe his Mom had family from Grambling. They moved back to Southern Cal in the early 2000's.

Does New Orleans keep Louisiana from being a flyover state?

It's worse than that really. New Orleans is the only thing that helps Louisiana from being literally the worst state in the country. As it is, we aren't far off.

Once you get outside of Louisiana, Lafayette is waaay less known than Shreveport. I would venture to say Lake Charles is more familiar to outsiders than Lafayette.

It is a shame ULL started dropping the hyphenated Lafayette. Now most people recognize the University of Louisiana as being in Monroe.

Just kind of depends on things...

I love college football, so I know the college towns. I grew up following baseball, milb as well. I also traveled a lot with my family. So I can rattle of plenty of cities in random states.

If you want to wonder what the average person can name, then look at it this way:

Do you consider yourself smarter than the average person? Then think of what you consider average intelligence to be. Then figure that half the population is dumber than that.

I think your average person in the US wouldn’t name more than NO, and either BR or Shreveport.

Yeah ... you can pretty much tell the people who never traveled around the country...
