Bill Baggett Sr was wealthy. Not rich. His firm is still one of the top in Louisiana

Id say the number of 7 figure lawyers is about tree, and the number of 7 figure orthopedic surgeons is about fiddy .

Fun fact: You’d be surprised at how little most lawyers make.

I would guess 20 plus lawyers in Lake Charles area make that much. Yes, lawyers make a lot more than most on this board believe.

some do, there's a lot out there that are barely getting by, as far as ROI for going to law school

I practice in Lafayette. I know of probably 10-15 who consistently make over $1 million a year. Can’t speak to Lake Charles

The ROI for practicing in small markets is very little unless you’re in PI or own your own firm. I don’t know how lots of folks do it. Spend 70-150k for a degree to make 70k in bfe.

Isn’t Louisiana supposed to be the best state in the country to be a lawyer?

I’m not insulting you but I just don’t believe this. Is he a practicing neurosurgeon or lawyer? I have a friend is a neurosurgeon and he has had no excess time to become an attorney (per him nor would he want to as it would provide no additional benefit to him; and you can’t refer patients to yourself). He earns just shy of 7 figures.

he went to law school after being a practicing neurosurgeon for a number of years

I don't care, why would I make that up? what purpose would that serve? it probably wouldn't be too hard to identify him but I'm not putting it out there

Attorneys likely have the greatest disparity in compensation of any professional degree by a long shot.

At the top end, you have Biglaw equity partners that average $1.4 million with some breaking into 8 figures and you see similar high comp at the upper end of mass torts plaintiffs attorneys (the ones that routinely close classes). The attorneys at the upper end of large billboard plaintiffs firms are making $1 million plus unless they are doing it wrong.

On the other end of the scale you have guys doing $500 no-contest divorces or hand-holding defendants through plea deals on routine misdemeanors. While I am not saying you can't make "good" money doing this there are a lot of attorneys just scraping by. I have a distant cousin who does no-contest divorces. He has a tiny office (maybe 500 ft sq including the small waiting room) and has no employees. Just a laptop and a printer. A couple of years ago he told me he made $73k the year before. While it is a livable wage where he resides it isn't what most people think of as lawyer money. The positive for him is he rarely works more than 3 days a week and almost a full 8 hour day when he does. Clients are usually in and out of his life very quickly and don't blow up his phone or email constantly.

Probably not many. I doubt anyone outside of personal injury. You can get there with big cases but it's going to be tough with a bunch of cases with 15k policy limits.

ETA: doctor's definitely make more on average imo. They can make 5 sometimes 6 figures on a single surgery.

Correct. There is a huge disparity. Many attorneys don’t crack six figures. As for the $1.4 million, maybe it depends how you define Biglaw. There are many larger, regional firms out there where some of the partners hit seven figures. But I wouldn’t call it average or typical. At least it isn’t at the firms I’m familiar with.

would you please show me where I said that? there's a story behind why he decided to go to law school late into his career, it really wasn't to combine that with his medical practice but he used it to his advantage
