Wonder where Roger is to tell the folks in this thread that they put themselves in this situation and should have planned better.
The actions you have adamantly pushed and called for have caused the destruction of more lives than this virus ever could.
Go ahead and call out another poster who says that people should plan for normal economic bad times when markets aren’t as lucrative, but completely ignore it is government interference and obstruction of commerce that is causing this.

I still have a job, but I’ll also be at it longer than intended with the bloodbath my 401k took. Both my sons have secure jobs, now more than ever they are seeing the value of busting their arse in school and getting good degrees. Their Mom works for a small business that is unlikely to survive much longer.

I give it another 2 weeks before I get laid off.

The ones downplaying this and making light of it have little or nothing to lose. They also don’t have a clue what it’s like to lose everything you’ve slaved for years for. We are now having everything taken away for a second time in a dozen years. I only pray that everyone making light of this is able to avoid experiencing a similar fate.
That’s right, I’m hoping that the ones that are being inconsiderate assholes today are not forced to face the same ruin that so many of the rest of us are enduring for a second time in our professional careers. Once is bad luck. Twice is not an accident. The powers that be have brought about both of these financial armageddons. I’m too old to rebuild from the ashes again. I’m not too old, however, to take my revenge.
Remember .com crash?
It’s gonna happen every decade or so

My ex-girlfriend from college is a flight attendant. She was beautiful... high school cheerleader. VERY in shape. Perfect tits. Used to let me stick it in her arse every once in a while.
I think I saw on Facebook that she lost her job.

However, the cynical side of me wants to point out the years of posters mocking those who aren’t prepared for layoffs and denigrating government help for those who don’t have a job.
Over the past 4 years people have been begging for hard working employees to fill open spots because they have too much work. Now, government has stopped commerce, and all economic engines to the detriment of millions of people. This is not the same as someone who chooses to sit on his arse and collect a SS check, a welfare check, or a trumped up disability check and if you can’t see that, we have nothing further to discuss.

Are the state mandated quarantined and prohibition of commerce NOT governmental fault?

How did you have everything taken away the first time?

So actions by the government are not actions the government is responsible for?

Too valuable to pay? What does that even mean?

Basically a lower tiered worker or one step up from a hand.

The bank I worked for in 2009 laid off 3,500, myself being one of them. The only work I could find at the time was a 2/3 decrease in pay. It took 10 years to work my way back to where I was in ‘09. This downturn will undoubtedly result in the same outcome.

Boilermaker is somewhat of a dated term. While they do work on industrial boilers they build/repair all sorts of vessels that hold liquids and gasses. In LA you see them working in petrochemical and pulp and paper.
They're still on railroads as well, however they don't work on steam locomotive boilers anymore.
Fabricators in the locomotive shops working on diesel locomotives.

My wife is a PT but in the home health setting. She’s actually seen a upntick in business. I’m in sales for a supplier in the construction industry with a large company. We may slow down but I’ll be safe. For the time being we’ve been pretty busy but I know that’s short term.

It means that what I do brings a lot of value but it’s also expensive for the company to pay for. They’ll get more mileage out of letting me go than they would others. They’re going to dump my salary for immediate cash despite the longer term detriment to the company. They’ll say it’s not personal it’s just business, but I take my commitment to the company very personally. Go figure.

I was laid off Wednesday morning. I was a purchasing agent for a Telecom maintenance company. Four years I’ve been with them.
I’m scared shitless and the prospects for finding a job quickly, grim. No one is hiring and the statistics for persons like myself finding a job, while jobless, are brutal.
I have two more paychecks and a small severance. Fortunately my wife is a teacher and is paid well. I have my VA disability, so it’s going to be super tight, but we can make it work.
