5 minutes.

I ride my bike to work when the weather is nice and it’s a 10-15 minute bike ride.

No way I’d do an hour commute.

Some people don't have a choice. Sometimes you have to keep driving away from the city until the schools are decent for your kids and you can afford the real estate.

My wife drives 45 mins.
I walk upstairs to my office outfitted with a 65” TV, guitars, guns, and taxidermy.

I can work remote a few days a week and have the option of 2 different office locations. Office 1 is 4.7 miles from home and takes about 10-12 minutes and office 2 is 1.5 miles from home and takes about 3-5 minutes if the school zone is flashing.

Highly recommend not doing this especially if you have small kids. My wife and I both took new jobs last year commuting into Memphis. The distance is only 25-30 miles but the drive always takes 1 hr. minimum each way. It has made life stressful, we have to take turns leaving work early because we've officially become the "late parents" to every single thing. The quite time listening to podcasts was nice at first but quickly got old. We're both taking new jobs to get back closer. Not always about the money as we've learned.

30 mins (and ~30 miles) from work in the city to get out past the hoods, the shiny new burbs, shopping, and stoplights...out to the corn / soybean fields and woods...and peace and quiet...that is until I turn on the honky tonk (or LSU baseball) in my garage / shop 200 ft from the house.

I would do an hour if it meant the same outcome as the above.

Most days, 20 seconds. As long as I'm not traveling out of town, longest would be 5 minutes. I do have to travel a couple of hours each way a couple of times a month.

35 minutes each way, but I take the metro. So it’s not horrible just sitting there listening to a podcast and drinking my coffee on the way in. The way back can be shitty if it’s packed, but that’s a rarity post-Covid.

I know you said you’re being priced out of closer places. Is it due to a lack of places for sale? Or are the places in your budget just not as nice as you were hoping for? Because if it’s the latter, lower your standards a little for a short commute. Spending 2+ hours in the car every day is an easy way to absolutely destroy your quality of life.

For anything reasonable, our commutes will be 1 hour one way and I’m not sure if that’s sustainable.

That’s a relatively short commute in Houston.

I know alot of people that did this late in their careers. They by land/build home where they want to retire and do this for the last couple of years before retirement.

I am surprised at the number of people that do this in Alaska. It's one thing to drive 45-90 mins in good weather, it's something else to have to do it in snow/ice.

I will have to count the steps. You might have me beat. But are your steps uphill in the snow? lol

18.1 miles driveway to parking spot.
Average about 27 minutes in, 23 minutes out.

Fastest I ever made it was 19 minutes during covid when no
one was on the road. Probably never beat it, they have since added 2 more stop lights.
