re: How long before they find the cure for cancer?

.you think it's too big of a leap to believe a lab somewhere is holding something that eradicates the majority of cancers...?
Yes.
Why is all cancer called cancer?
It is tied together because cells replicate out of control and, in some cases, lose the functionality of what made them that kind of cell in the first place. In others, they become too functional at what they do.
The one thing in common is that it's replication of the cell.
This happens because either
1) machinery to make the cell turn on is too active
2) machinery to make the older cells die is inactive
Problem: these mechanisms are active in all your cells. So a drug to stop replication makes you sick as shite.
A drug to promote cell death makes you sick as shite.
In certain cancers, we have identified the specific Gene that's on/off and found a therapy that alters just that specific machinery. When making drugs like this, it's very time-consuming, expensive, and in many cases, lucky - designing molecular-level interactions is difficult because we can only really study the way proteins are folded outside the body and the way they work inside the body can (but doesn't have to be) different. Mess up by a little bit? It can kill people or, heaven forbid, cause more/different types of cancers.
This is in contrast to something like an antibiotic or anti viral or antifungal medication.
In these cases, you have foreign material attacking the body, and they use different machinery to replicate and make you sick. It's much easier to Target overtly different machinery with little interaction with your own body, thus you have a multitude of very well-tolerated antibiotics that work for a broad variety of infections.

They’ve managed to keep cannabis illegal for this long. Wouldn’t suprise me even though I doubt it would stay secret. Rich corporate types in big pharma have family members with cancer too.

Common folks have around a 22% risk of catching cancer with an expected increase to over 30% by 2030. Billionaires enjoy a much lower rate of under 5%. Maybe they take better care of themselves, or
maybe they know something we don’t?

Can you please explain where this info is coming from?
What constitutes a "common" person and what's the difference between those screened regularly by a physician vs not?

Way too much money to lose from the "treatment "
One of the dumbest conspiracy theories around.
Eye catching at first glance, but completely falls apart when you actually think about it. I've worked for a major cancer treatment company, one of the biggest in the country, that has both a treatment and research wing.
I promise it would be more lucrative to cure if they created the cure. First company to cure it and patent the cure will make so much money it would sound like fiction.
ETA:
And they're all different. Just 1 cure for 1 type of common cancer would be worth hundreds of billions.

The 22% is just the percentage of Americans who will be diagnosed with cancer which is expected to rise by more than by 2030. The national cancer institute actually gives current Americans a 38% chance of developing cancer during their lifetimes.

How do you feel about Stevie Wonder faking his blindness? I'm trying to get more people on the train with me.

Link to the claim?
All cancer, disease with risk of metastases, or are we talking about the risk of basal/squamous cell of the skin that goes away with a knife and no further treatment?

You're right the first time.
They take better care of themselves.
And when you say "catching cancer", you sound like a moron.
ETA:
and please source your stats.

Don’t get so butthurt over wording. I was just stating facts. All of us are affected by this horrible disease in so many different ways.

Read the link. Don't see the stat on millionaires. Is that from elsewhere?
Also, I realize that's a government and information-driven website that is indeed reputable, but that's a silly stat. Because as I said above, skin cancers that aren't melanoma don't really belong in the stats alongside breast, lung, prostate, colon, etc. They inflate the stat pretty significantly and aren't really a significant cause of morbidity or mortality.
ETA: I said millionaires. You said billionaires. Regardless, I didn't see a real demarcation by income.

You would think Paul Allen knew about this, maybe he just refused to pay. Seriously, there is a long list of very wealthy people that have died from cancer.

The billionaire data was group research from a paper we did while still in school. It was roughly 530 billionaires at the time with less than 20 diagnoses with “known cancers”. It is possible that some had cancer and chose to keep it secret, but there is little hidden from the public when it comes to the super rich. It’s been years, but that stat has stuck in my brain.

It is concerning to me that people truly believe this. Of course researchers want to find cures for cancers. The price points will be based on many things, including avoiding the costs of less effective options.
Hepatitis C cures like Havroni and Mavyret are good examples. The only other pharmacological options prior to these treatments cost over $50,000, cause horrible side effects, and are <50% effective. Meanwhile that person can spread the disease to others. If a liver transplant is ultimately needed, that is well over $500,000.
The new Hep C treatments are almost 100% successful at CURING the disease, have fewer side effects, and cost $85,000 - $100,000. Seems high? Consider that there is now potential to eradicate hepatitis C vs the status quo.
I don’t think the manufacturer viewed possible eradication of Hep C as a self limiting investment. Do you?
There is no secret cure for cancer. Dying/suffering people are far less profitable than people who have a real chance to not die/suffer.

They already have one. But why cure something when they can bleed you dry with all the medicines to keep you alive but never cure it?
Posted on 10/24/18 at 2:55 pm to al_cajun
They don't want a cure. They want a long term treatment. Come on into the deep state rabbit hole.
