The rampant talk in the early to mid 2000's was the prediction that phone books, magazines and newspapers would be obsolete in 10 years. Here we are in 2016 and you see still the aforementioned print media exists everywhere.

Phone book - I haven't seen one used in years.

quote:

simply recycling or throwing away the 650,000 tons of phonebooks distributed nationally each year costs municipalities somewhere between $45 and $62 million.

Phone book advertising is still big business. The industry is forecasted to rake in $11.4 billion in 2014, of which 66 percent comes from printed directories, according to independent market researcher IBISWorld. Despite industry strength, demand is expected to fall 7 percent over the next five years as people continue to question its relevance.

Well, here's what I feel and what the data tells us. People take in media in different formats differently. You simply soak in more when reading print. That's why I like reading a paper instead of staring down at my stupid iPhone screen.

Go down to the police station. You'll see the preferred use of phone books.

Same way. Believe me, much rather read a book than use a Kindle. It's sensationalism. I heard so many professors in college around 2002 say that print media will be completely dead by 2010.

Print has done what tv media has done: bought into sponsered content, increased ad space, cut circulation volume and/or frequency, consolidated number of outlets, increased partisan opinion for "buzz", and eliminated expensive investigative journalism.

Basically, quality journalism has been lost to budget cuts, creating a market for a demand which is completely underserved. Trust in media is at an all time low because they have found that ads, tabloid journalism, and partisan bickering are cheaper to produce than unobjective fact finding.

What such behavior leads to, much like reality tv, is lower operating costs paired with a short term boost in ratings followed by a long steady decline in viewership and interest as those who were drawn in by the "new thing" begin to be dwarfed by the loyal viewers no longer being served.

Basically, the people who liked shows about Killing Hitler kinda thought shows about alligator hunting were cool for a moment or two, but when they realize that the kinds of shows they came to see are no longer offered in favor of shows about hairy bikers, taxidermists, aliens, and crab fishermen, they tune out and leave altogether.

I worked in a print shop until last year. The owners were doing quite fine while a lot of advertising is digital, print media will be around for awhile.

Saw a study some time back (no link because I am not looking for it) where they swabbed a bunch of random people's phones and found E. coli on over half. Yummy.

Oh I believe it... People in general are nasty creatures. I once dropped a brand new nextel phone(during that brief moment they were cool) in a toilet at the Mall of LA. Went of to get a plastic bag and a something to grab it with..Came back a few minutes later....It was gone... Some nasty MFer just reached in and took it..
