How important is it to be able to defend yourself in a physical altercation?

Of course anyone would choose to be able to defend themself vs not be able too. But how important is it really? I know everyone on here thinks themselves the second coming of Chuck Liddell, but let’s face it , even if you are physically imposing/know how to fight, you never what the other person brings to the table(fighting skills or a weapon.) Anyway what are your thoughts on the importance of being able to defend yourself in a physical confrontation?

Really damn important. If you can’t defend yourself you’re not a man. Not a woman. You’re an it

So women who can’t defend themselves are an “it”? You couldn’t defend yourself against Jon Jones, so does that make you an “it”?

Last time I got attacked I was able to put the guy on the ground and subdue him.
He came back out with a .45 pointed in my face.
That was the last time I had a fight.

frick off with the John Jones comparison.
There may be 100 dudes in the 7.5 fricking billion people on this world who could defend themselves against him.
If you can’t defend yourself against an average person where you live, you’re a huge pussy

Pussy.
I saw him at a hotel/casino once. I was coming back from the bar, he passed me in the hallway wearing some homo looking suit. I called him out then and there and he was too chicken shite to stop say anything or come back and face me. Just kept walking, went and hid in his room.

Completely unimportant.
Unless you find yourself in a physical altercation.
Then, very important.

You do understand that "Man's" need to feel adequate in that area is completely because of protecting females and children right? Whether I can defend myself or not is pretty irrelevant because the average human will never be put in a situation in which to be tested. But EVERY man on the planet has been "judged" by the opposite sex on his either inferior or superior physical prowess sub-consciously or intentionally. Females are physically at a disadvantage and through out time have both chosen and discarded potential mates because of that vulnerability they possess. So is it important to protect myself? Probably not, but it is very important for my girlfriend, wife, or otherwise to believe I can defend myself or protect her and "our cubs" should that danger present itself. And by Darwinian survival of the fittest genes, that "presence or confidence" continues on where those weak or timid fade out.

I haven’t been in a fight since the fourth grade, and it’s not for lack of ability to piss people off. 99% of the time, someone who gets in a fight wanted to fight. Stop being so fricking trashy.

Ok fair enough, but how is it “really important”? Seems like with the potential criminal and civil charges, injury, or even death, that street fighting is hardly ever the correct choice. And I don’t see how the Jon Jones thing is bullshite. You couldn’t defend yourself against plenty of people, and not to mention if it were a group of people or someone with a weapon.

This could be the stupidest thing I have ever read on the OT...and that is saying A LOT!

If you have a gun, you should be straight.

Fighting and self defense are two different things. If you're over 12 years old you shouldn't be fighting. If you're over 12, it's good to know some self defense skills, by far the best of which is situational awareness. A confrontation avoided is a confrontation won.

I don't know most fights that go to scorecards or that allow someone to get pointed after beating jones arse. To each their own though

Eh. I care enough to make a reasonable effort not to be an easy target, but I’m not ever going to be one of those douchebags “training” in their Affliction t-shirts. No matter who you are there is always somebody who can kick your arse, so best not to worry about it too much. Plus, as others have mentioned, a firearm is the great equalizer.
