Opposite here. I think people who can't get through life without getting drunk or high are pathetic.
This is just another "I'm cooler than you" thread. Some people can't feel good about themselves unless they are shitting on someone else.
Hell, any dumbass can be a fricking drunk.

Have you gained anything since quitting? Very interested to hear your insight, especially on nightly alcohol habit after work. Thanks.
I never drank every day, but I would sometimes get a little excessive when I did drink. The positive aspects are nothing earth shattering, no hangovers, no worrying about getting DUI, the money saved was not that significant. I can go to social events, concerts, the beach, and what or how to drink does not have to be a concern. so just a lot of little changes. My wife drinks, usually a glass of wine every day, and maybe a drink with dinner if we go out, and it does not bother me at all. I have drank a glass of wine a couple of times in recent years and even that small amount of alcohol gives me a felling that I don't care for, something just switched off in my brain and that was it.

Valerian can make you really sleepy or it can give you a nice sense of calmness.
Do you know what to expect after a few times (whether it's like melatonin and will make you sleepy or it will calm and relax you)?

St. John's Wort is a good herbal alternative for anti-anxiety drugs. Works for me. Personal recommendation: try two capsules every day for a week, then increase dosage until you feel it is working. I take three capsules a day.
This is safe, right? 3 pills seems like a lot. Are you still all there - like not cloudy headed? I don't think I've had a Xanax in 20 years.

None of that shits cool sober, though.
Umm, my car is pretty damn cool sober, because the alternative, a DUI, is decidedly uncool.

I guess having more money and being in better health would be pretty terrible

I have no idea how sober people go through life
I don't drink alcohol, coffee or smoke. I have tried all three. I have the exact opposite thoughts on this. How do people go through life having to depend on vices? Perhaps their lives suck. I wouldn't know. Mine is great.

I never enjoyed tobacco and I pretty much quit drinking a couple years ago. Alcohol is truly a shitty drug. The hangovers are ridiculous, the calories are not needed, and being drunk is not nearly as enjoyable as the high from any other drug.

Probably true.

Literally like Xanax without the bad side effects.
Not even close dude. Have you ever had a xanax or did someone just tell you this or what?

I agree that life without any drug would suck. Imagine living in medieval Europe. You had alcohol, but no coffee, chocolate, not much sugar, no pot, no pills. Harsh.

Yeah St Johns Wort helps some folks but does nothing for me. If it had any real strength it would be outlawed, naturally.

This is the first time I've ever quit drinking, and I don't hate it. No hangovers (although Id take hangovers over some of these symptoms), I follow through with my weekend morning workouts, clear head, no mindless drunk snacking, no drunken word vomit, etc.

I definitely see the merit in a sober lifestyle, but sometimes I miss having a glass of wine after a long work week.

It's not really bad. I can't drink because of a bum liver and I can sit out with the neighbors on the weekend while they have a few with no problems. It's been 3 + years since my diagnosis and I can't say I've even been seriously tempted.
Now, salt is another matter. That shite is hard as hell to cut back on. And they put tons of it in pretty much everything.

People who don't drink are truly missing out on stuff like incredible scotch, wine, and a cold beer on a hot day.
I smoked in HS and early in college, that shits for the birds. Quitting was best personal decision of my life. Much easier to get poonnanny too.

I didn't make a conscious decision to give up drinking. Just happened over time, starting with when I was no longer a full time student and couldn't afford to waste the next morning with a hangover.

I am currently going into the last week of February without having smoked a cigarette since New years eve. I didn't have a resolution for it but I noticed about two weeks after new years that I hadn't had one and that's when I said frick it I'm gonna go for it. The threats of higher taxation and Baton Rouge becoming "smokeless" helped me make the decision.
The big test was the spanish town / super bowl weekend. I got good and drunk but managed to get through it without a smoke. I can be fine without it till I get a beer in my hand. But so far the urge hasn't been so bad that I couldn't resist.
As far as drinking; not a chance. I'll probably be buried with a six pack.
