A young guy I knew right out of high school went and told the recruiter he wanted to work on jets. Recruiter guaranteed him he would be in the 'aviation community'. Kid gets his orders and spent 4 years fueling aircraft. He had a bitter streak that couldn't be broken and with that attitude, he was locked in to that crappy job until his enlistment was up.
Yes, there are some less than honest people doing recruiting.

Recruiters that lie cause themselves a lot more work. Kids can, and do, easily Google and know about it. I was always straight forward because I didn't want to have a kid come back and discharge, which would increase my workload.

You cant really lie anyways, especially in the Marines when we used benifit tags to talk about tangible and intangible needs and wants. Then everyone has to sign an open contract because without scores, we cant guarantee a job. Example, kid you can be intel; kid scores 31 AFQT, welp, there's one lie from the beginning. There are bonuses, but a $3_5k bonus isn't much after taxes and meeting certain requirements. Most kids really didn't ask about bonuses, and the bonuses we had were for Comm, and jobs that needed filled.

Of course other branches are different.

My recruiter was honest to me, at least. He did look the other way on a few things in my past and coached me on a few answers to give to MEPS, but he didn't make my any promises that he didn't fulfill or misrepresent anything to me. If anything, the few semi-dishonest things he did helped me out.

If you walk in and say

“I want to enlist in the infantry and leave as soon as I can.”

Then they have no reason to lie to you.

I also told him I wanted to party. I was probably an easy recruit.

eta- and because I requested to party he locked me in to Korea.

I went to talk to a recruiter after I graduated college the first time. I didn't like my first field and thought I'd get into officer's school.

Eventually I remembered that I've always had a problem with authority and that I probably wasn't a great fit for the military.

I had a rough first year and a half but they have these things called extra duty and corrective training.

I can't remember my recruiter ever lying to me. I was only in the DEP for a few weeks though.

Lol. Like i said before, i went in the USMC to literally escape town in a way so i didn’t have the 3 felonies catch up with me. Disappearing for 4 years was probably the smartest thing i could have even begun to do. I was basically out of sight, out of mind.

I had a specific goal in mind when i went into the marine corps and wouldn’t let my recruiter tell me one way or the other.

They tried which lead me to believe there was some push for certain MOS’s.

Anyway, they talked a big game and made it sound like rainbows and bunny rabbits but i knew what was up in a way.

Yeah, I was lied to.
Except hot chick was hot just a b&t&h.

1. All hit chicks you want.
(Fattys that get out of 1982 Ford Escorts the car rises 6”)

2.Enough money for Loweider which was my goal.
Nope I would have been better off flipping burgers at McDonald’s

3. See the world
Ok, yeah you do I seen Mian Indian ruins, been to Europe, seen monkeys get mad at me for clearing their home on a crawler tractor - D8 Dozer. They get mad when you clear out parts of a jungle that was their home.

4. Get on the job training
1st time around chose 12B combat engineer. The lady at meps tried to offer me a quartermaster job, heavy equipment operator job, or 88M Truck driver position.
I did reclass as a 62E and 62J down the road.

Did go to jump school early 80’s my CO was big in airborne thing and actually sent five of us cherrys or guys new to the unit. He would sit in chair and tell us stories, show us his Airborne tattoos on his arm, and always ended with hot women or being a hero.

Jump school was not like he said.
We use to run everywhere he left that out.

Then we got back to the unit he kept pushing that hey the Airborne needs good young troops.

5. You get hot women sometimes.
The girl that claimed we were engaged in Germany was 6ft 4”, nice body.
ok, long blonde hair, blue eyes, and nice fun things to play with. She was just a rough person to deal with as she was an E7 over paper clerks.
She treated me like a rag doll and callled me her b&t$h. Beat me at arm wrestling and beat me up a few nights. She hit hard. She bought an engagement ring for me to give to her as her goal was to get married before she turned 30.

6. You get $2500 sign on bonus.
They divided it between so many checks you never noticed.

7. First check goes for uniforms, hair cut, PX stuff, running shoes, and stuff like that.

8. I admit I had some fun times and then in combat not so fun times. You do have good and bad days just got to suck it up. Good place for young people to learn life skills.

She sounds like a LOT of fun to me. I would teach her how to respect her man.

She broke my jaw man when I told her she was hot just not the marrying kind of girl. Next think I know I was on the ground getting up.

I didn't pay for uniforms. They were part of initial issue. If I recall I spent around $150 out of my first check. They wouldn't let most people use the running shoes they brought but the pair I brought just happened to be one of the six pairs available at the PX so they couldn't claim mine weren't approved. So I spent a bit less than most because of that. I did think it was bullshite we had to pay to get our scalps mauled.
