If Iran closes the Straight of Hormuz, they lose something like 90% of their export $. Mighty hard to pay nuke scientists and IRGC officers their hazard pay if you don't have any government income to pay 'em with.
Saudi and the US can both pump more. Having said that, the bulk of Iranian exports go to China, so do we really care if prices go up in China? China will likely go hat in hand to Russia, which isn't supposed to be selling on the international market anyway.

Oil traders didn't miss it. I see some financial writers screaming about prices from $100 to $180, meanwhile the traders have barely nudged the price up.

Insurance companies would stop the tankers. Then countries would have to guarantee the insurance companies against loss.
Either way, the oil is gonna flow. I think China gets 60% of its oil through there.

We escorted tankers through there before when the Iranian "navy" (a collection of Boston whalers with a machine gun mounted on the bow and some idiot in the cushions with an RPG) was attacking them.
