Liberal pundits insist Obama's speech at Hiroshima on May 27, 2016, was no apology, despite such guilty apologetics as these:quote:
"Yet in the image of a mushroom cloud that rose into these skies, we are most starkly reminded of humanity's core contradiction . . . How easily we learn to justify violence in the name of a higher cause."
"Hiroshima teaches this truth . . . The scientific revolution that led to the splitting of the atom requires a moral revolution as well."
"The memory of August 6, 1945 must never fade . . . It fuels our moral imagination. It allows us to change."
"Hiroshima and Nagasaki are known not as the dawn of atomic warfare but as the start of our own moral awakening."

That movie was such a cocktease. I was really hoping to see a full scale dogfight between zeros and tomcats.

Considering until recently, they didn't even have much of a "standing army" in the conventional sense, your question is asinine.

They even having enough babies to field armies these days ?

That is the truth. I remember watching that as a kid and waiting for the ultimate arse kicking to take place. 1 US carrier vs. the entire Jap fleet.
You always play those scenarios out in your head and I thought we would get it.

If "today" means Obama is president, then he would probably give them Hawaii and give them a bunch of OUR money to stay there.

Today's Japan? Is that a serious question?
Japan in the 40s had arguably the most dominant naval fleet in the world when it attacked the US. Now? Lol.

positing a force similar to what they had, and the intention to attack by stealth,
sure.
they could go on a good will tour, visiting Portland and Acapulco.
be seen heading home, and then
BOOM.

In order to pull off an attack (and inflict the same level of damage) using technology available today they would need to do the following:
1. Cyberwarfare denial of our space sensors such as the AIS satellites that track all ocean going vessels. This must be done as the fleet leaves harbor and in a manner that does not alert the military an attack is imminent.
2. Massive launch of cruise missiles via sub, ship and long range air assets. The attack would take place at night and the missiles would fly very low to avoid detection as long as possible.
3. Aircraft would be used in "mop up" duty but would require massive ECM support. If even one aegis equipped ship survives the initial attack, those planes are toast.
As others have said, the Japanese do not currently possess the ability to attack but the Russians and Chinese certainly do.
I would hope our submarine force would track the fleet once they left harbor and would sound the alarm once the fleet showed a track for Hawaii. It was standard practice for subs to track Soviet fleet operations during the cold war. We had better location information on their fleet than their admirals back in St. Petersburg

About as far as they did, then Obama would start apologizing.

This is essentially the N-word to the Japanese. Ask some of the guys I work with what's something that you'd never call a Japanese persona and its this. They were very very stern about it too.
Anyway, the Japanese wouldn't make it out of their own harbor before we laid down the law.
