How does pressing criminal charges on someone work?

You fill out the affidavit at justice court, and then it has to be run by a judge or district attorney first? Or does the police department automatically go and pick the person up? Is he charged right away or is there a detainment/questioning period before someone is charged? Let's say it's for a petty midsdemeanor such as harassment. Just curious to how these things go.

Good question. Someone wrote me a check from a closed account and I need to bring charges against them. I'm just too lazy to go to Challmette and do all that.

You have to lick the back and press them down hard to make sure they stick.

the DA prosecutes the case, so you need to speak to them.

Usually a DA won't do anything without a police report so contacting the police would be your first step.

Call the police/sheriff
Some things like worthless checks you can often call the DA Office directly
Some things you can go to the justice of the peace. I see it mainly in theft cases.

Call the cops and give them all relevant information
They will either call and get a statement or turn it over to a detective immediately
Detective gets it and it goes from there

You don't press charges. The state does. You call the cops. The cops decide weather to arrest or issue a summons. Then the DA decides whether to prosecute.

For harassment, or any misdemeanor other than an insufficient funds check, you will need to file an initial offense report with the PD or sheriff. After that, you will need to provide a deposition to the municipal court magistrate. The magistrate will determine if a warrant will be issued.
