That is terrible advice. Detectives don't mess with most crimes anyway. Only felony.

In Mississippi you need a police report. Either call the police or go to the station and get a report done. You then have to sign a affidavit at the station in front of a court clerk at the station. The prosecutor will then review the warrant pack. If he approves it, then the judge will get it. If he signs it then it is taken to the police department and the warrants division will go find the suspect and arrest him.

If it goes to trial you have to provide the evidence to convict him on misdemeanor cases. The police department will do some of the investigation but the burden of proof is mostly on you.

If the suspect is on scene such as a shoplifter or trespassing case then you can place the person under citizen's arrest and the office will take him into custody. You then go to the station and swear in the affidavit.


I don't know how Louisiana or other states do it though.
